Pharmacist-Delivered Program for Smoking Cessation
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to help people living with HIV quit smoking through a new program that involves pharmacists more directly in tobacco treatment. The program, ENHANCE-TTS, equips pharmacists with tools and training to deliver smoking cessation services effectively. The trial will evaluate the program's effectiveness in helping patients stop smoking and identify any challenges in its implementation. Suitable participants include those living with HIV, over 21, who have consulted a clinical pharmacist for smoking cessation, and speak English. As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative approaches in smoking cessation for people living with HIV.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your healthcare provider.
What prior data suggests that the ENHANCE-TTS program is safe?
Research has shown that team-based programs to help people quit smoking, such as ENHANCE-TTS, are generally safe and manageable. One study on a similar program found that involving pharmacists and tobacco treatment counselors helped more people quit smoking without major side effects. This finding suggests that the ENHANCE-TTS program could be a safe choice for participants. While no specific side effects have been noted for ENHANCE-TTS, the program primarily involves training and support, which are unlikely to pose safety concerns.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the ENHANCE-TTS program because it represents a fresh approach to smoking cessation by actively involving pharmacists in the treatment process. Unlike traditional methods that often focus solely on medications or counseling, this program enhances the delivery of tobacco treatment services through team-building and specialized pharmacist training. It also provides essential tools like infrastructure planning, problem-solving, and coaching, which can lead to more personalized and effective patient care. This innovative approach could potentially increase the success rates of quitting smoking by leveraging pharmacists' accessibility and expertise in healthcare settings.
What evidence suggests that the ENHANCE-TTS program is effective for smoking cessation in people living with HIV?
Research has shown that the ENHANCE-TTS program, which involves pharmacists in smoking cessation efforts, is promising. In this trial, participants will engage with the ENHANCE-TTS program. Studies have found that when trained Tobacco Treatment Specialists participate, nearly 90% of patients set a quit date. The training they receive significantly boosts their chances of quitting. Another study found that these programs can lead to substantial success, with 25.9% of participants remaining smoke-free for eight weeks. This evidence suggests that pharmacist-led programs like ENHANCE-TTS could effectively help people quit smoking, particularly those living with HIV.23678
