What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores whether online speech therapy is as effective as in-person sessions for children with a cleft palate, a condition affecting speech. Researchers aim to compare children's ability to pronounce words and sentences with both types of therapy and assess if parents notice improvements in speech clarity. Children with a cleft palate, who experience speech sound disorders, and pass a basic hearing test may be suitable for this study. Participants will engage in 30-minute sessions twice a week for 10 weeks, either online or face-to-face.

As an unphased trial, this study provides families with a unique opportunity to explore innovative therapy options that could enhance their child's speech development.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.

What prior data suggests that this speech therapy method is safe for children with cleft palate?

Research has shown that online speech therapy is safe for children with a cleft palate. In one study involving children aged 4 to 12, the online sessions were well-received, and no serious problems occurred. The children's speech became clearer, and their speech sound improved, indicating that this method works well without causing harm. Other studies also support the safety and effectiveness of online speech therapy.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the speech therapy delivered via telepractice for cleft palate because it offers a flexible and accessible alternative to traditional face-to-face therapy. Unlike standard in-person sessions, telepractice allows patients to receive effective speech intervention from the comfort of their homes, which can be particularly beneficial for those with mobility issues or who live in remote areas. This method leverages modern technology to maintain the quality of care while increasing convenience and potentially reducing barriers to regular therapy attendance.

What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for children with cleft palate?

Research has shown that online speech therapy is effective for children with a cleft palate. In this trial, participants will be divided into two groups: the Telepractice Group, receiving speech therapy through telepractice, and the Face-to-Face Group, receiving therapy through face-to-face home health sessions. Studies have found that online speech therapy works just as well as in-person sessions, with similar improvements in speech clarity. Specifically, one study reported that 84% of children made significant progress after online sessions. Another review found that online therapy is not only feasible but also provides results as reliable as traditional methods. Overall, online speech therapy is a promising option for children with a cleft palate.13678
