What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a telephone program designed to encourage older adults to share life memories, aiming to reduce loneliness and boost mental well-being. Participants will discuss their experiences over the phone three times a week and answer questions about their social support and life satisfaction. The trial compares those who start the program immediately with those who begin after 12 weeks to determine if an earlier start offers greater benefits. It suits older adults living in rural areas who have a caregiver and can participate in phone calls. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity for participants to contribute to research that could enhance social connections and improve the quality of life for older adults.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for this trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It seems focused on telephone-based activities, so it's unlikely that medication changes are required.

What prior data suggests that the telephone reminiscence program is safe for older adults and their caregivers?

Research has shown that the telephone reminiscence program is safe and well-received by older adults. Studies indicate that this program can greatly improve mental health without any risk. No reports of negative effects have emerged from using the program. This makes it a safe way to boost psychological well-being and reduce feelings of loneliness. Participants share their life stories over the phone, helping them feel more connected and satisfied with life. Overall, the program provides a positive and safe experience for those who join.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the Telephone Reminiscence Program because it offers a unique approach to improving mental health in older adults. Unlike traditional treatments that often rely on medication or in-person therapy, this program uses automated phone calls to engage participants in recalling meaningful life experiences. This method not only provides mental stimulation but also allows informal caregivers to participate by recording personalized questions, fostering a sense of connection and support. As a result, it has the potential to be a more accessible, cost-effective, and personalized option for enhancing mental well-being.

What evidence suggests that the Telephone Reminiscence Program is effective for improving mental well-being and reducing loneliness in older adults?

Research has shown that a phone-based reminiscence program can boost mental well-being in older adults. In this trial, participants in the Immediate Telephone Reminiscence Program arm will begin the 12-week program immediately, while those in the Wait-List Control arm will start after a 12-week delay. Studies have found that people in these programs often experience emotional improvement. They report increased social support, reduced loneliness, and greater life satisfaction. The program encourages participants to share and reflect on their life stories, fostering emotional connections. This method has proven especially effective for older adults, helping them feel more connected and supported.13456

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
