Family Foundations Program for Mental Health
(SS-SE Trial)
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to help parents of children entering the special education system by boosting their confidence and ability to support each other and access necessary services. It evaluates whether a series of learning sessions, known as the Family Foundations for Special Education program, improves co-parenting, parent mental health, and child adjustment. Researchers will divide participants into two groups: one attending six informative sessions and the other continuing with standard support. Ideal participants are co-parents who have a child about to start the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process for the first time in a Philadelphia elementary school.
As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity for parents to enhance their skills and support networks.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.
What prior data suggests that the Family Foundations Program is safe for participants?
Research has shown that the Family Foundations Program has been well-received in past studies. Programs like this improve how parents work together and enhance their overall well-being, with no reported safety issues. The program helps parents communicate and support each other better, focusing on learning and discussion rather than medication or medical procedures. This approach results in a low chance of negative effects. Participants in previous studies did not experience any side effects.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the Family Foundations for Special Education (FF-SE) program because it offers a fresh approach to supporting families in the special education system. Unlike standard supports, which often provide general guidance, FF-SE focuses on enhancing communication and cooperation between co-parents through six targeted virtual learning sessions. This program aims to improve the Individualized Education Program (IEP) experience by equipping families with specific strategies and resources, making it a proactive and personalized method. The convenience of virtual sessions and the comprehensive workbook provided sets this program apart, potentially leading to more effective and harmonious educational planning for children with special needs.
What evidence suggests that the Family Foundations Program is effective for improving co-parenting and service access for children with disabilities?
Research has shown that the Family Foundations program can significantly enhance how parents collaborate and improve their parenting skills. This is crucial for families with children requiring special education. In this trial, participants in Group A will engage in the Family Foundations for Special Education (FF-SE) program, which includes six virtual learning sessions. One study found that the program accounted for 39% to 55% of improvements in children's behavior and mental health. Improved parental cooperation directly benefits children. The program also helps parents navigate and utilize the special education system more effectively, resulting in better access to services and increased satisfaction. These positive changes in family dynamics and service access can lead to improved outcomes for both parents and children in special education.13678
