What is the purpose of this trial?

A randomized, open-label behavioral study designed to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and early impact of a large language model (LLM)-based artificial intelligence (AI) tool to support patient understanding following an initial oncology consultation.

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for adults who have recently had their first prostate cancer consultation and want extra support understanding their diagnosis and care. Participants should be able to use digital tools and communicate in English.

Inclusion Criteria

I am newly diagnosed and have seen or plan to see a radiation or surgical oncologist at UCSF.
I am 18 years old or older.
I have been diagnosed with localized prostate cancer by lab tests.

Exclusion Criteria

I am unable or unwilling to join two study teleconferences.
I have had definitive treatment for prostate cancer.
I do not have impairments that prevent me from understanding or completing study tasks.

  • AI-guided COUNSEL Intervention

Trial Overview

The study tests an AI-powered tool called COUNSEL that helps answer questions and provide information after a prostate cancer consultation, compared to usual care. Participants are randomly assigned to either the AI tool or standard education materials.
