What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores how artificial intelligence (AI) can assist doctors in creating precise treatment plans for prostate cancer patients during brachytherapy, a specific radiation therapy. The AI helps outline the prostate on ultrasound images to improve the accuracy of radiation treatment. Participants will have their prostate outlines generated either by AI (referred to as Artificial Intelligence Generated Contours) or manually by a medical trainee. The trial seeks participants approved for a type of prostate cancer treatment called HDR brachytherapy. As an unphased trial, it offers the opportunity to contribute to innovative research that could enhance future prostate cancer treatments.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What prior data suggests that this AI-assisted contouring method is safe for prostate cancer treatment?

Research has shown that AI technology can help doctors outline the prostate more accurately than traditional methods. In one study, AI identified prostate cancer locations with an accuracy rate of 84.7%, effectively pinpointing cancer sites.

Specific safety information about AI-generated outlines is not yet available. As this research remains in the early stages, the primary goal is to assess the AI's effectiveness. Detailed safety data might not be available at this point. Generally, AI tools do not directly affect the body like medications. Instead, they assist doctors in creating better treatment plans.

While specific safety data is unavailable, this technology appears to be a promising tool for improving prostate cancer treatment planning without direct risks to the body.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the use of Artificial Intelligence Generated Contours in prostate cancer treatment because it streamlines and potentially enhances the accuracy of prostate HDR brachytherapy. Unlike the traditional manual method, which relies on the skill and experience of clinicians to outline the prostate on ultrasound images, the AI-assisted approach uses a U-net algorithm to assist learners like residents or new attendings. This could lead to more consistent and precise treatment planning, reducing variability and potentially improving patient outcomes.

What evidence suggests that AI-generated contours are effective for prostate cancer brachytherapy?

This trial will compare AI-generated contours with manually generated contours in ultrasound-based prostate HDR brachytherapy. Research has shown that using AI to create treatment plans for prostate cancer looks promising. In about 57.5% of cases, people preferred the AI-generated outlines over those done by hand. Studies also indicate that AI and doctors achieve similar results when mapping the prostate for radiation therapy. AI-assisted outlines are known for their high accuracy, often surpassing traditional methods. Overall, AI has the potential to make prostate cancer treatments, such as brachytherapy (a type of internal radiation therapy), more precise.12567

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for adults with prostate cancer who are eligible for whole gland HDR prostate brachytherapy under general anesthesia. People can't join if they've had certain previous prostate treatments, a rectal spacer, or only need part of the prostate treated.

Inclusion Criteria

I am 18 years old or older.
I am eligible for whole gland HDR prostate brachytherapy under general anesthesia.

Exclusion Criteria

I have had a permanent seed implant for radiation therapy.
I have had targeted HDR brachytherapy to part of my prostate, not the whole gland.
Presence or insertion of a rectal spacer
