What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to enhance an online parenting program, Essentials for Parenting Toddlers and Preschoolers (EFP), to make it more engaging and effective for parents of toddlers and preschoolers. Researchers are testing various add-ons, such as gamification (making activities game-like) and motivational boosts, to determine what works best. Parents with children aged 18 to 36 months who have internet access and can speak and read English are ideal candidates for this study. As an unphased trial, it offers parents the chance to contribute to innovative research that could improve parenting resources for families worldwide.

Is there any evidence suggesting that this trial's treatments are likely to be safe?

Research has shown that the Essentials for Parenting Toddlers and Preschoolers (EFP) program is a trusted, free online resource created by the CDC. It primarily helps parents manage common issues with young children, such as tantrums and whining. As an educational tool rather than a medicine or physical treatment, it does not present typical safety concerns associated with medical trials.

The new features being tested, including game-like elements, motivational boosts, and gentle reminders, are widely used to enhance engagement and motivation. Studies on game-like elements have demonstrated a significant increase in user involvement, with some evidence of improved safety and behavior outcomes. Motivational boosts have effectively increased commitment and motivation, particularly in therapy settings. Gentle reminders have successfully enhanced involvement and decision-making in healthcare settings.

Overall, the EFP program and its new features are considered safe, aiming to improve user experience and involvement without any physical risks.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the Enhanced Internet-Based Program for Parenting Challenges because it explores innovative ways to support parenting through digital means. Unlike traditional parenting programs that may involve in-person sessions or standard educational materials, this program uses elements like gamification — turning tasks into game-like experiences — and motivational enhancements to engage parents in a more interactive and fun way. Additionally, it introduces "low engagement nudges," which are gentle reminders designed to keep parents involved even when life gets busy. By integrating these modern approaches, the program aims to make learning and applying parenting skills more accessible and engaging, potentially leading to better outcomes for families.

What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for parenting challenges?

Research has shown that the Essentials for Parenting Toddlers and Preschoolers (EFP) program helps parents adopt positive parenting techniques and reduces non-violent behavior. Studies have found that it assists parents in managing common issues like tantrums and whining. In this trial, participants will receive the Core EFP intervention, with some receiving additional elements like gamification, which turns tasks into games to make the program more engaging. Evidence suggests that these fun elements can boost motivation and increase participation. Other participants will receive motivational enhancements, which have improved parental engagement and outcomes in previous studies. Simple reminders, or low engagement nudges, will be tested in some arms to help keep parents involved. Together, these elements aim to make parenting programs more effective and engaging.12367
