Biofield Therapy for Cancer
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to determine if Reiki, a gentle touch therapy, can reduce fatigue and improve well-being in adults with cancer receiving immunotherapy. Participants will either begin Reiki sessions immediately or after a short waiting period, sharing their experiences and feelings throughout the process. Ideal participants are those currently undergoing immunotherapy for cancer and experiencing significant fatigue. The researchers aim to demonstrate that Reiki is both beneficial and easy to implement in this setting. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity for patients to explore a complementary therapy that could enhance their quality of life during cancer treatment.
Do I have to stop taking my current medications for this trial?
The trial does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It seems focused on adding Reiki as a complementary therapy, so you may not need to stop your current treatments.
What prior data suggests that Reiki is safe for cancer patients receiving immunotherapy?
Research has shown that Reiki is generally safe and well-tolerated by cancer patients. Studies have found that Reiki can help ease symptoms like pain, anxiety, and tiredness. For instance, one study found that patients who received Reiki felt less anxious and had a better mood before surgery. Another study suggested that Reiki was more effective at reducing pain, anxiety, and stress compared to fake Reiki or simple relaxation techniques.
Most people who have tried Reiki describe it as a positive experience. In one report, 94% of patients at a cancer center reported a good experience with Reiki. It is important to understand that while Reiki helps with symptoms, it is not a cure or treatment for cancer itself. Instead, it aims to improve quality of life and provide support alongside other treatments.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Unlike traditional cancer treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery, Reiki is a form of biofield therapy that aims to harness energy healing to alleviate symptoms like fatigue, pain, and emotional distress. Researchers are excited about Reiki because it offers a non-invasive and holistic approach that could complement existing therapies without adding side effects. By exploring potential neurophysiological and biological changes through EEG measurements and blood samples, this trial seeks to provide scientific insights into how Reiki might improve the well-being of cancer patients.
What evidence suggests that Reiki might be an effective treatment for cancer-related fatigue?
Research has shown that Reiki can help cancer patients by reducing pain, anxiety, and stress. For example, one study found that Reiki eased these symptoms more effectively than placebo treatments or simple relaxation exercises. Another study demonstrated that Reiki improved the overall quality of life for cancer patients, enhancing their well-being. Patients also reported feeling less tired and experiencing a better mood after Reiki sessions. In this trial, participants in the Immediate Reiki Intervention arm will receive six weekly, in-person Reiki sessions. Meanwhile, those in the Waitlist Control arm will initially undergo a six-week observation period before crossing over to receive the Reiki intervention. Although Reiki is not a medical treatment, it serves as a supportive practice that can enhance well-being for those dealing with cancer.12356
Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for adults with cancer who are currently receiving immunotherapy and experiencing fatigue. Participants should be able to attend in-person sessions and complete interviews and questionnaires.Inclusion Criteria
Exclusion Criteria
Timeline for a Trial Participant
Screening
Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial
Qualitative Interview
Participants participate in a one-hour, one-on-one interview about their experiences with cancer treatment and integrative care practices such as Reiki
Immediate Reiki Intervention
Participants receive six weekly, in-person 30-minute Usui Reiki sessions. Before and after each session, questionnaires are completed, and at the first and final sessions, blood samples and EEG measurements are taken.
Follow-up
Participants complete questionnaires about fatigue, pain, and stress four weeks after the final Reiki session, followed by a satisfaction survey.
Waitlist Observation
Participants complete a 6-week observation period with brief weekly fatigue questionnaires and two in-person sessions with EEG measurements.
Washout Period
A 4-week period with no sessions, after which participants complete questionnaires about fatigue, pain, and psychological distress.
Delayed Reiki Intervention
Participants receive the same six weekly, in-person 30-minute Reiki sessions as the Immediate Group, with questionnaires, blood samples, and EEG measurements.

Trial Overview
The study tests whether Usui Reiki, a gentle hands-on relaxation technique, can help reduce fatigue, pain, and stress in adult cancer patients on immunotherapy. Participants are randomly assigned to get Reiki right away or after a waiting period.

Experimental Treatment
Participants randomized to this arm will first complete a six-week observation period without receiving Reiki following the qualitative interview. During this time, participants will complete regular symptom assessments. They will attend two in-person visits (Week 1 and Week 6), which will include a Sham Reiki session, and EEG measurement. Following the observation period, participants will complete a four-week washout period and then cross over to receive the Reiki intervention, consisting of six weekly, 30-minute sessions delivered by a trained practitioner (as described in the Experimental arm).
Participants randomized to this arm will receive the Reiki intervention immediately following the qualitative interview portion of the study. The intervention consists of six weekly, in-person Reiki sessions delivered by a trained practitioner, with each session lasting approximately 30 minutes in a calm, quiet setting. Participants will complete patient-reported outcome measures before and after each Reiki session to assess symptoms of fatigue, pain, and emotional distress. In addition, participants at Week 1 and Week 6 will undergo non-invasive electroencephalogram (EEG) measurements and blood sample collection to explore potential neurophysiological and biological changes. Following the intervention, participants will complete a satisfaction survey.
