CLiKX Device for Chronic Ear Infection
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests the safety and performance of a new device called the CLiKX, which assists in placing ear tubes to treat chronic ear fluid issues. The CLiKX® Tympanostomy Tube Delivery System will be used during surgery to determine if it can position the ear tube correctly without requiring full anesthesia. Researchers will monitor participants for any side effects during the procedure and for 30 days afterward. This trial is open to individuals scheduled for ear tube placement with ear canal diameters of at least 4 mm. As an unphased trial, it offers participants the chance to contribute to innovative research that could enhance future ear tube procedures.
What prior data suggests that the CLiKX device is safe for placing ear tubes?
Research has shown that the CLiKX Tympanostomy Tube Delivery System is generally well-tolerated by patients. Studies have found that ear tubes placed by this device are safe for treating long-term ear fluid and infections.
One study used similar devices successfully in a doctor's office, with children managing the procedure well. Common side effects were mild, such as temporary discomfort or irritation. Another report confirmed that these systems can be safely used with local anesthesia, reducing the need for general anesthesia.
The CLiKX system is designed to place tubes efficiently and accurately, aiming to reduce risks. Although any medical procedure can have side effects, previous research suggests these are usually mild and manageable.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
The CLiKX® Tympanostomy Tube Delivery System is unique because it offers a new method for treating chronic ear infections, specifically targeting the ease and precision of tube placement. Traditional methods involve surgical myringotomy procedures, which can be invasive and require general anesthesia. However, the CLiKX device aims to simplify this process with a more efficient and potentially less invasive approach. Researchers are excited about its potential to make ear tube placement quicker and more accessible, which could significantly improve patient comfort and recovery times.
What evidence suggests that the CLiKX device is effective for chronic ear infection?
Studies have shown that tympanostomy tubes, small tubes placed in the ear, effectively treat chronic ear fluid, also known as otitis media with effusion. These tubes help clear fluid, reduce the frequency and severity of infections, and improve hearing in children within 1 to 3 months compared to observation alone. Research indicates that about 30% of ears with these tubes may experience some drainage, but the benefits usually outweigh these side effects. This trial tests the CLiKX device, which aids in placing these tubes, to make the process faster and safer. Overall, tympanostomy tubes are a proven treatment for chronic ear fluid problems.26789
Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for children and adults (at least 6 months old) who need ear tubes due to chronic ear problems, have an ear canal at least 4 mm wide, and can give consent or have a parent/guardian provide it.Inclusion Criteria
