What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests whether portable air filtration units can lower lead dust exposure and reduce blood lead levels in young children living in older homes. The study will operate air filtration systems in homes for two months to determine their impact on air quality and health outcomes. It is suitable for children under seven with elevated blood lead levels who live in homes built before 1978. Participants must also sleep at home during the study period. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity for families to contribute to research that could enhance children's health and home environments.

Do I need to stop my child's current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether your child needs to stop taking their current medications. It's best to discuss this with the study team or your child's doctor.

What prior data suggests that this portable air filtration system is safe for use in homes?

Research has shown that portable air filters can help reduce lead dust in homes. These filters use HEPA technology to trap tiny particles like lead dust. They are safe for home use, with no reports of serious side effects.

A review of studies on portable air cleaners confirms they improve air quality without causing harm. This evidence suggests that portable air filters offer a safe and effective way to lower lead exposure.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Unlike traditional treatments for lead poisoning, which often involve chelation therapy to remove lead from the bloodstream, the portable air filtration system is unique because it targets the environment where lead exposure occurs. Researchers are excited about this approach because it proactively reduces lead particles in the air of affected homes, potentially lowering exposure before it affects the body. This method could complement existing treatments by addressing the source of contamination directly, offering a new layer of protection for at-risk populations.

What evidence suggests that portable air filtration is effective for reducing lead exposure?

This trial will evaluate the effectiveness of portable air filtration systems in reducing lead exposure. Studies have shown that portable air filters can reduce exposure to harmful airborne particles, including lead dust. Research from various studies indicates that these filters effectively improve indoor air quality. By capturing tiny particles, they can lower the amount of lead dust that children might inhale in older homes. Although more research is needed to confirm their specific impact on lead, early results suggest these filters could help protect children from lead exposure.14678

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for children under 7 years old who have elevated blood lead levels and live in homes built before 1978. The child must sleep at home during the two-month study, and both the child's health and family situation must allow participation.

Inclusion Criteria

My child is under 7 and has a blood lead level above 5 µg/dL.
