N95 Masks for Lung Health During Wildfire Season
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial explores whether wearing N95 masks can protect golfers' lung health during wildfire season, when smoke pollution often worsens air quality. Participants will either wear N95 masks or not while golfing outdoors, particularly on days with moderate or worse air quality. The goal is to determine if the masks help maintain healthier lungs in these smoky conditions. The trial seeks regular golfers who play at least twice a week and do not smoke. As an unphased trial, participants contribute to important research that may enhance health recommendations for outdoor activities during wildfire season.
Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.
What prior data suggests that wearing N95 masks is safe for lung health during wildfire season?
Previous studies have shown that N95 masks effectively protect against small particles found in smoke, dust, and smog. These masks filter out harmful tiny pieces of solid or liquid matter in the air that can affect lung health. Experts widely recommend N95 masks during wildfire smoke events to protect the lungs.
These studies have reported no serious side effects from wearing N95 masks. However, proper fit is crucial for effectiveness, so it is important to wear them snugly against the face. While N95 masks do not protect against gases or vapors from fires, they are considered safe and comfortable for filtering out particles.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about using N95 masks for lung health during wildfire season because these masks are designed to filter out fine particles from the air effectively, offering a promising way to protect respiratory health. Unlike standard surgical masks or no face coverings, N95 masks provide a high level of filtration, capturing up to 95% of airborne particles, which can be crucial when air quality is compromised by wildfire smoke. This trial aims to explore whether consistently wearing N95 masks when air quality is poor can significantly reduce health risks associated with breathing in polluted air, potentially offering a simple, proactive solution for vulnerable populations.
What evidence suggests that wearing N95 masks is effective for lung health during wildfire season?
Research has shown that N95 masks can greatly protect lungs during wildfire smoke exposure. In this trial, some participants will wear N95 masks outdoors when the Air Quality Health Index indicates moderate risk or higher. One study found that wearing an N95 mask reduced the risk of breathing problems to 21%. Another study showed that these masks lowered hospital visits due to wildfire smoke by about 30%. While N95 masks effectively filter out tiny particles, they do not protect against gases in the smoke. Overall, N95 masks offer strong protection against harmful particles in smoky air.45678

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for people with asthma who regularly golf outdoors (at least twice a week) during wildfire season. Participants should be able to wear an N95 mask and spend time outside when air pollution levels are moderate to high.Inclusion Criteria

Timeline for a Trial Participant
Screening
Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial
Treatment
Participants are randomized to receive N95 masks or not and instructed to follow guidelines for outdoor activity based on Air Quality Health Index readings for 8 weeks
Follow-up
Participants are monitored for changes in lung function, blood pressure, and respiratory symptoms after the treatment phase
What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?

Trial Overview
The study tests if wearing an N95 mask while golfing outdoors during wildfire season helps protect lung health in people with asthma. Participants will use the masks over two months on days with higher air pollution.
