What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to help Veterans with chronic musculoskeletal pain by testing a personalized coaching program. The goal is to create a self-care plan tailored to each person's unique needs, improving pain management. Participants will either receive the coaching program or continue with their usual care routine. Veterans experiencing chronic pain most days for the past three months are suitable candidates for this trial. As a Phase 1 trial, the research focuses on understanding how the treatment works in people, offering participants a chance to be among the first to benefit from this innovative approach.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It focuses on non-drug approaches to managing pain, so it's best to ask the trial organizers for more details.

What prior data suggests that this coaching intervention is safe for Veterans with chronic pain?

Research has shown that coaching for chronic pain is generally safe for participants. Studies have found that health coaching can increase activity levels and reduce pain without causing serious side effects. For instance, a review of several studies found that health coaching helped adults with chronic pain improve daily activities and manage pain more effectively. Another study demonstrated that a health coaching program significantly reduced pain for many participants after three months.

Although there are no reports of major negative effects from coaching, paying attention to how the body reacts to new treatments remains important. Overall, evidence suggests that coaching for chronic pain is well-tolerated and could be a promising method for pain management.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the Coaching for Chronic Pain trial because it explores a unique approach to managing chronic pain through personalized coaching. Unlike standard treatments like medication or physical therapy, this program focuses on helping individuals develop and maintain their own pain self-care plans. This method empowers patients to take an active role in their pain management, potentially leading to more sustainable and adaptable results. By tailoring strategies to each person's specific needs and lifestyle, this coaching intervention could offer a more holistic and personalized alternative to traditional pain management techniques.

What evidence suggests that this coaching intervention might be an effective treatment for chronic pain?

Research has shown that health coaching can help manage chronic pain. A review of studies found that coaching increases physical activity, reduces disability, and decreases pain in adults with long-term non-cancer pain. In this trial, participants in the intervention arm will receive coaching to develop and maintain a personalized pain self-care plan. Some research suggests that coaching through online tools, known as telehealth coaching, teaches skills to cope with chronic pain. Coaching typically involves creating a personalized plan, which helps people manage their pain more effectively. By focusing on self-management and lifestyle changes, coaching supports lasting pain relief.13567
