Tranexamic Acid for Tonsillar Bleeding
(TEAPOT Trial)
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests whether a special mist medicine, nebulized tranexamic acid (TXA), can stop bleeding after children have their tonsils removed. The goal is to prevent the need for additional surgery or a blood transfusion if bleeding occurs post-operation. The trial compares this mist with a placebo (a mist without active medicine) to determine which is more effective. Suitable candidates for this trial are children who experience bleeding more than a day after their tonsillectomy. As an Early Phase 1 trial, this research aims to understand how the treatment works in children, offering participants the opportunity to be among the first to potentially benefit from this new approach.
Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.
Is there any evidence suggesting that nebulized tranexamic acid is likely to be safe for humans?
Research has shown that nebulized tranexamic acid (TXA) is safe and effective for stopping bleeding after tonsil removal. In one study, 14 out of 58 patients used nebulized TXA, with none experiencing negative side effects, and over 60% stopped bleeding during the exam. Another study found that nebulized TXA effectively treated mild bleeding early in children, with no reported safety issues. These findings suggest that nebulized TXA is well-tolerated and can help control bleeding without requiring additional surgery.12345
Why do researchers think this study treatment might be promising?
Tranexamic Acid is unique because it offers a novel delivery method as a nebulized treatment for tonsillar bleeding after a tonsillectomy. Unlike standard care options that may involve direct pressure, cauterization, or systemic medications, nebulized Tranexamic Acid is inhaled, potentially allowing for more targeted and immediate action at the site of bleeding. Researchers are excited about this approach as it could reduce the need for more invasive procedures and provide a faster, more effective solution to manage post-surgical hemorrhage.
What evidence suggests that nebulized tranexamic acid is effective for tonsillar bleeding?
Research has shown that nebulized tranexamic acid (TXA), which participants in this trial may receive, can help stop bleeding after a tonsillectomy. In one study, more than 60% of patients who used nebulized TXA stopped bleeding without side effects. Another study found that TXA controlled bleeding in all patients tested, eliminating the need for further surgery. Overall, TXA appears safe and may reduce the need for additional medical procedures. Participants in another arm of this trial will receive nebulized saline as a placebo comparator.23467

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for children aged 2 to 17 who have had their tonsils removed and are experiencing bleeding more than 24 hours after surgery. They must come to the emergency department with this type of bleeding.Inclusion Criteria
Timeline for a Trial Participant
Screening
Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial
Treatment
Participants receive three consecutive doses of nebulized tranexamic acid (TXA) over approximately an hour
Follow-up
Participants are monitored for safety and effectiveness after treatment, including blood loss and recurrence of hemorrhage
What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?
Interventions
- Nebulized Tranexamic Acid
Trial Overview
The study compares a mist medicine called nebulized tranexamic acid (TXA) against normal saline (salt water) mist to see which works better at stopping post-tonsillectomy bleeding in kids.
