What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores how various social media marketing strategies affect teenagers' views on vaping and e-cigarettes. Participants will watch videos featuring influencers of different ages promoting e-cigarettes alongside themes such as entertainment, fitness, and fashion. The researchers aim to understand how these marketing strategies impact perceptions of e-cigarette harm and the influencers' credibility. Teens aged 14-17 who speak English fluently are well-suited for this study. As an unphased study, this trial provides a unique opportunity to contribute to important research on social media's influence on youth perceptions.

What prior data suggests that this protocol is safe for adolescents?

Studies on e-cigarette marketing on social media have examined its impact on young people's thoughts and actions. These studies focus on attitudes and potential use rather than direct health effects, helping to understand how teens respond to this marketing.

Research has shown that exposure to e-cigarette content on social media correlates with more positive views of vaping among young people. This exposure can make e-cigarettes appear more attractive, potentially influencing young people's thoughts and willingness to try them.

Regarding safety, the trial involves watching videos, not using e-cigarettes, so there is no direct health risk from the study itself. However, understanding how e-cigarette marketing affects perceptions can help address potential vaping risks in teens.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about this trial because it explores how different types of influencer marketing can shape perceptions of e-cigarettes. Unlike traditional methods that focus on direct advertising, this study looks at the impact of influencer age and the context in which vaping is promoted, such as alongside fitness, fashion, or entertainment. By understanding these dynamics, the trial aims to uncover how social media influences vaping behaviors, which could lead to more effective public health strategies in the future.

What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective?

This trial will explore how different social media marketing strategies affect perceptions of vaping. Participants will watch various videos featuring influencers of different ages and contexts promoting e-cigarettes. Research has shown that e-cigarette ads can significantly influence young people's views on vaping. Specifically, studies have found that when teens see these ads, they might start to believe vaping has more benefits and fewer risks. One study found that young people exposed to these ads are more likely to try e-cigarettes. Another study highlighted that influencer-driven social media marketing often makes vaping appear more appealing and less risky. Overall, this evidence suggests that e-cigarette advertising can shape young people's views and increase their likelihood of trying vaping.14678
