Telehealth Follow-up for PICS
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial explores whether telehealth follow-up appointments with a pharmacist can improve recovery for individuals who have survived a critical illness and been discharged from the intensive care unit (ICU). The goal is to determine if this approach, known as Post-ICU Telehealth Follow-up, can effectively support recovery from post-intensive care syndrome (PICS), which includes issues like weakness, cognitive difficulties, and emotional distress after leaving the ICU. Participants will receive either the telehealth follow-ups or the usual post-ICU care. The study seeks individuals who have spent a significant time in the ICU and are preparing to return home after their hospital stay. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative care methods that could enhance recovery for future ICU survivors.
Do I need to stop my current medications for the trial?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.
What prior data suggests that this telehealth follow-up is safe for post-ICU patients?
Research has shown that telehealth check-ins after an ICU stay are generally well-received. A review of studies found that digital tools like video calls, phone check-ins, and online health management aid recovery without major safety issues.
Another study found that patients using telehealth follow-up services were satisfied, with no unexpected negative health effects reported. This suggests the treatment is safe for most people.
The telehealth follow-up in this trial supports recovery after a serious illness. It aims to be safe and helpful, based on previous research and similar programs.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about Post-ICU Telehealth Follow-up for PICS because it offers a new approach to managing recovery after intensive care. Unlike traditional in-person follow-ups, this method uses telehealth appointments at one and three months post-discharge, making it more convenient for patients who may have mobility issues or live far from healthcare facilities. By facilitating regular check-ins from the comfort of a patient's home, this approach aims to improve long-term recovery and outcomes, potentially reducing the stress and logistical challenges associated with traditional follow-up care.
What evidence suggests that this telehealth follow-up is effective for PICS?
Research has shown that telehealth check-ins after an ICU stay can aid recovery from post-intensive care syndrome (PICS), which includes various health issues following intensive care. In this trial, the Telehealth Intervention Group will receive telehealth follow-up appointments approximately one and three months after hospital discharge. Studies have found that these online health services can enhance patient recovery by providing timely support and advice. A review demonstrated that telemedicine care after ICU stays successfully engages patients and makes treatments more effective. Additionally, research has found that telehealth follow-ups can save money by reducing the need for emergency room visits. Overall, these methods offer promising ways to support recovery from serious illnesses.12345
