What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a new training program called INSPIRE for healthcare teams. The goal is to determine if this program can change attitudes and improve care for individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) around childbirth. Healthcare personnel at the University of Utah who work directly with birthing individuals and speak English are invited to participate. The program includes online learning modules and in-person simulations to reduce stigma and enhance care practices. As an unphased trial, participants can contribute to pioneering research that may transform care practices for new mothers with SUD.

What prior data suggests that the INSPIRE intervention is safe for healthcare teams?

Research has shown that the INSPIRE program is a training package for healthcare providers, designed to improve care for people with substance use disorder (SUD). Reports indicate no physical side effects from the training, as it consists of learning modules and group activities.

Since the INSPIRE program is neither a medication nor a medical procedure, it lacks the typical health risks associated with drug treatments. Instead, it focuses on altering healthcare providers' thoughts and actions. In this context, "safety" refers to the program's acceptance and any changes in provider behavior.

Previous INSPIRE-related projects have demonstrated positive outcomes, such as reduced stigma and enhanced support for people with SUD. Consequently, the program appears to be well-received by participating providers.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the INSPIRE Program for Substance Use Disorder because it focuses on enhancing provider capabilities through innovative training methods. Unlike traditional approaches that primarily involve medication or behavioral therapy for patients, INSPIRE empowers healthcare providers with a comprehensive educational package. This includes online learning modules and hands-on simulation, designed to improve how they deliver care. By equipping providers with better tools and techniques, INSPIRE aims to indirectly improve outcomes for patients struggling with substance use disorders.

What evidence suggests that the INSPIRE provider training is effective for improving care for individuals with substance use disorder?

Research has shown that focusing on healthcare teams can improve outcomes for people with substance use disorder (SUD). The INSPIRE program, which participants in this trial will receive, may help reduce substance misuse by addressing negative attitudes and behaviors among healthcare providers. Studies have found that peer support and coordinated care can significantly reduce drug and alcohol use. These approaches also improve mental and physical health, as well as social stability, such as housing and employment. Evidence suggests that well-organized care strategies effectively treat SUD, especially in healthcare settings. Overall, these methods show promise in enhancing care for SUD patients.678910
