What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores the effectiveness of voice therapy for individuals with neurogenic voice disorders, which can cause voice tremors. The goal is to determine if this therapy can improve quality of life, voice sound, and voice function. Participants will use a technique called "breathy voice" to help manage vocal tremors. Individuals may qualify if diagnosed with essential tremor and have a vocal tremor identified by a doctor or speech expert, and can speak and read English. As an unphased trial, this study offers participants the opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research that could enhance treatment options for voice disorders.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.

What prior data suggests that this voice therapy is safe for neurogenic voice disorders?

Research has shown that speaking with a softer, breathy voice might help people with vocal tremor. This method appears to manage symptoms, though its effectiveness varies among individuals. It may work better for some than others. Studies have not reported any harmful side effects from this technique, suggesting it could be a safe option for managing vocal tremor.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Breathy voice therapy is unique because it offers a novel approach to managing vocal tremor, a condition that affects the voice. Unlike traditional treatments for dysphonia, which might include medications or surgical interventions, this therapy uses a compensatory strategy, teaching patients to adopt a breathy voice as a way to stabilize vocal output. Researchers are excited about this method because it is non-invasive and could provide immediate and practical benefits, potentially improving patients' quality of life without the need for more aggressive treatments.

What evidence suggests that voice therapy is effective for neurogenic voice disorders?

Research has shown that using a soft, breathy voice can help manage shaky voices, which often occur in certain voice disorders caused by nerve issues. Studies have found that this technique smooths the voice by reducing shakiness. In one study, 84.7% of patients who used voice therapy noticed improvements in their voice quality. Another report highlighted that voice therapy, including breathy voice techniques, greatly improved overall voice quality for many people with voice problems. Therefore, strong evidence supports that voice therapy, especially using a breathy voice, can effectively enhance voice quality and its perception in people with these disorders. Participants in this trial will explore the use of breathy voice as a compensatory strategy for vocal tremor.13467
