Yoga Styles for Insomnia
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to determine if different styles of yoga can improve sleep and heart health in adults, regardless of insomnia status. Participants will engage in moderate-intensity Vinyasa yoga, gentle low-intensity yoga, and watch a nature documentary to assess the effects on their sleep and heart health overnight. Suitable candidates include adults with or without insomnia who do not regularly practice yoga but understand basic yoga poses. As an unphased trial, this study allows participants to explore potential personal health benefits from yoga practices.
What prior data suggests that these yoga styles are safe for improving sleep and heart health?
Research shows that both gentle yoga and Vinyasa yoga are generally safe for most people. Studies have found that gentle yoga, which includes low-intensity exercises, is usually easy to handle. It has few side effects and safely improves sleep and reduces sleep problems in people with insomnia. Similarly, Vinyasa yoga, which is more active, does not worsen sleep issues or cause significant side effects. It may aid sleep and heart health without major safety concerns. Overall, these types of yoga are considered a safe and effective way to support better sleep.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Most treatments for insomnia involve medication or cognitive behavioral therapy. But researchers are excited about yoga as a treatment option because it offers a non-drug approach to improving sleep. Gentle yoga provides a calming, low-intensity session that can help relax the body and mind, while Vinyasa yoga introduces a more dynamic, moderate-intensity practice that may also boost physical fitness. These yoga treatments are appealing because they not only target insomnia but also promote overall well-being without the side effects often associated with medications.
What evidence suggests that these yoga styles could be effective for improving sleep and heart health?
Research has shown that gentle yoga, one of the treatments in this trial, can noticeably improve sleep quality. One study found that practicing yoga for a moderate duration improved sleep quality by 8.74%. People with insomnia who practiced gentle yoga reported better sleep and faster sleep onset.
For Vinyasa yoga, another treatment option in this trial, studies have also demonstrated significant improvements in sleep quality. Participants practicing this type of yoga experienced increased total sleep time and better sleep efficiency, meaning they spent a higher percentage of time asleep. Overall, both gentle and Vinyasa yoga, as studied in this trial, have shown promise in helping people with insomnia achieve better sleep.16789Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for adults aged 18-40 who are not very physically active, have no health issues that prevent exercise, and either have diagnosed insomnia or sleep well. Participants need to know basic yoga poses and own a smartphone or tablet.Inclusion Criteria
