What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to evaluate how a specific breathwork program, called Les Mills Breath, affects running performance. Researchers seek to determine if daily participation in this 20-minute breathwork program can enhance breathing, heart function, and running speed more effectively than a simple meditation session. The trial compares two groups: one practicing the breathwork program and the other engaging in guided meditation. It seeks participants who run for pleasure and typically run between 30 and 520 minutes a week. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to explore innovative methods for enhancing running performance.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What prior data suggests that this breathwork program is safe?

Research has shown that the Les Mills Breath program is generally safe. Studies suggest that breathwork practices, such as those in Les Mills Breath, can improve focus and reduce stress. Although specific data on negative effects for this program is lacking, breathwork is widely considered low-risk.

The program incorporates techniques like deep sighing and controlled breathing, which have been studied for their positive effects on athletic performance. These non-invasive methods have been used for a long time without major safety concerns.

In this trial, researchers are testing the Les Mills Breath program alongside a mindfulness meditation group. Both methods are known to be well-tolerated and carry minimal risk, making them safe options for most people.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about this trial because it investigates unique mindfulness techniques to potentially enhance running performance. Unlike traditional methods that might focus on physical training alone, this trial explores the benefits of mindful meditation and breathwork. The mindful meditation arm emphasizes relaxation through video-based sessions, which can help runners manage stress and improve focus. Meanwhile, the breathwork arm utilizes innovative breathing techniques like physiological sigh, cyclic breathing with breath holds, and resonant frequency breathing, which may boost lung capacity and endurance. This approach offers a novel way to potentially enhance athletic performance by integrating mental and physical training.

What evidence suggests that this breathwork program is effective for running performance?

Research has shown that breathwork programs like Les Mills Breath, which participants in this trial may receive, can improve running performance. Studies have found that training the breathing muscles, a component of the Les Mills Breath program, strengthens and enhances the efficiency of the diaphragm. This type of training has enhanced performance in various sports, including running. Additionally, it has been linked to better heart rate variability, indicating improved recovery after exercise. While researchers continue to gather specific data on Les Mills Breath, current findings suggest it could enhance running speed and overall endurance.12356

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for adults who regularly run for 30 to 520 minutes per week and are healthy enough to exercise, as confirmed by a physical activity questionnaire.

Inclusion Criteria

* Must pass the Get Active Questionnaire to assess physical activity risk
* Must regularly engage in recreational running for between 30 and 520 minutes per week

Timeline for a Trial Participant

Screening

Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial

2-4 weeks

Treatment

Participants engage in daily 20-minute sessions of either breathwork or mindfulness meditation

4 weeks
Daily sessions (self-administered)

Follow-up

Participants are monitored for changes in running performance, respiratory function, and heart rate variability

4 weeks
2 visits (in-person) for baseline and follow-up assessments

What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?

  • Les Mills Breath

Trial Overview

The study compares two daily programs: a specific breathwork routine (Les Mills Breath) versus guided mindfulness meditation. Both last 20 minutes each day, aiming to see which better improves breathing, heart rate variability, and running performance.
