Clinical Decision Support Tool for Chronic Kidney Disease
(PROMPT-CKD Trial)
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests a new tool designed to help doctors make better treatment decisions for patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). The study aims to determine if the "best practice alert and order set for CKD" tool can increase the number of patients receiving medications that align with guidelines. One group of doctors will use the tool, while another group will continue their usual care. This trial suits individuals diagnosed with CKD who can take oral medications and have specific conditions like high blood pressure or heart failure. As an unphased trial, it offers patients the chance to contribute to innovative research that could enhance treatment strategies for CKD.
Do I need to stop my current medications for this trial?
The trial information does not specify if you need to stop your current medications. However, it focuses on adding specific treatments for chronic kidney disease, so you might be able to continue your current medications unless they interact with the trial drugs.
What prior data suggests that this clinical decision support tool is safe for use in healthcare settings?
Research has shown that using a computerized decision support tool, like the one in this trial, can enhance medication safety for people with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Studies have found that these tools assist doctors in selecting the right medications and doses, particularly for those with kidney problems. This reduces the risk of medication errors and improves patient safety.
For example, one study found that these tools provide real-time alerts about better medication options for patients with kidney issues, helping to prevent harmful prescriptions. Overall, these tools are user-friendly and have been shown to make managing medications safer for patients with CKD.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
This clinical decision support tool for chronic kidney disease (CKD) is unique because it integrates directly into a provider's workflow, offering a best practice alert and order set when a patient's medical record is accessed. Unlike traditional CKD management, which often relies on manual decision-making and external guidelines, this tool provides real-time, evidence-based recommendations at the point of care. Researchers are excited because this approach could streamline the treatment process, reduce errors, and ensure more consistent adherence to best practices, potentially improving patient outcomes in CKD management.
What evidence suggests that this clinical decision support tool is effective for influencing prescriber behavior in Chronic Kidney Disease?
Research has shown that clinical decision support (CDS) tools can significantly enhance how doctors manage chronic kidney disease (CKD). These tools assist doctors by providing timely alerts and treatment options directly in the patient's electronic medical record. In this trial, some providers will use a CDS tool that includes a best practice alert and order set for CKD, while others will continue with usual care without the CDS tool. For example, one study found that a CDS system improved prescription practices and patient health. Another study demonstrated that these tools can enhance the accuracy of CKD diagnosis and treatment planning. Overall, evidence suggests that CDS tools help healthcare providers make better decisions for CKD care.678910

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for adults (18+) diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. Participants must be able to take oral medication and meet specific criteria for certain medications based on their kidney function, diabetes status, heart failure, blood pressure, or protein in urine.Inclusion Criteria
Timeline for a Trial Participant
Screening
Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial
Treatment
Providers are exposed to a clinical decision support tool to influence prescription behavior for CKD treatment
Follow-up
Participants are monitored for safety and effectiveness after treatment, including time to new GDMT prescription and other secondary outcomes
What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?

- Best practice alert and order set for CKD
Trial Overview
The study tests whether sending tailored electronic messages and order sets to healthcare providers can help increase the use of recommended treatments for patients with chronic kidney disease. Providers are randomly assigned to receive these tools or not.
How Is the Trial Designed?
2
Treatment groups
Experimental Treatment
Active Control
Providers will see a best practice alert with an attached order set upon opening the order entry screen in an eligible patient's medical record.
Providers will not be exposed to the clinical decision support tool when in the medical record of an eligible patient.
