What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests the safety and effectiveness of the AlphaReturn Blood Management System, a new method for treating acute pulmonary embolism, a condition where blood clots block blood flow in the lungs. The treatment uses a device to remove clots and then filters and reinfuses the patient's blood. Individuals diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism via CT scan and who have experienced symptoms for two weeks or less might be suitable candidates.

As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative research that could enhance future treatments for pulmonary embolism.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial does not specify if you need to stop taking your current medications. However, you cannot participate if you've used thrombolytics (medications that dissolve blood clots) in the 30 days before the trial.

What prior data suggests that the AlphaReturn Blood Management System is safe for treating pulmonary embolism?

Studies have shown that the AlphaReturn Blood Management System, when used with the AlphaVac MMA system, is generally safe. Research indicates that this combination effectively treats sudden blood clots in the lungs by filtering and returning blood to the body, and patients have tolerated it well. Although specific side effects are not detailed in available sources, the FDA has already approved the AlphaVac system for other uses, suggesting its safety for this combined treatment. Additionally, the AlphaReturn system reduces blood loss during procedures, offering a significant benefit. Overall, current research suggests the treatment has a promising safety profile.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the AlphaReturn Blood Management System for treating pulmonary embolism because it offers a novel approach that could transform patient care. Unlike traditional treatments, which often involve anticoagulant medications or invasive surgery, this system works by using mechanical thrombectomy to physically remove clots. The key innovation here is the ability to filter and reinfuse the patient's own blood, potentially reducing the need for blood transfusions and minimizing blood loss. This method not only aims to effectively clear clots but also promotes quicker recovery by preserving the patient's blood volume and components.

What evidence suggests that the AlphaReturn Blood Management System is effective for treating acute pulmonary embolism?

Research has shown that the AlphaReturn Blood Management System can safely return a patient’s own filtered blood during treatment for a pulmonary embolism. In this trial, participants will receive treatment using the AlphaVac MMA System combined with the AlphaReturn Blood Management System. This combination has shown promise in significantly reducing blood loss when removing blood clots. Studies indicate that this approach may help quickly clear dangerous clots, improve breathing, and reduce serious complications. Early results suggest this method is effective and safe for treating sudden lung blockages, potentially leading to a faster recovery.12367

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for adults (18+) who have been diagnosed with an acute intermediate-risk pulmonary embolism within the last 14 days, confirmed by a CT scan. Participants must be stable enough for a procedure and meet certain heart and blood pressure requirements.

Inclusion Criteria

I am 18 years old or older.
I have been diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism from a CTA scan.
I have had symptoms of a serious lung blood clot for 14 days or less.
