What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to evaluate how effectively the Peer Coach Training (PCT) program enables middle-school students with past discipline issues to support their peers positively. The study examines whether training these students can lead to improved behavior and a stronger sense of community at school. The trial includes two groups: one begins the PCT immediately, while the other follows the usual school support before trying PCT later. Ideal candidates are middle-school students referred for disciplinary reasons at least once since the school year began. As an unphased trial, this study provides students with a unique opportunity to contribute to enhancing school environments and peer relationships.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for this trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What prior data suggests that Peer Coach Training (PCT) is safe for middle-school youth?

Research has shown that Peer Coach Training (PCT) is generally manageable for participants. In studies of similar peer coaching programs, people often report positive outcomes. For instance, an 8-week peer health coaching program for college students improved exercise, diet, sleep, and mental health, with no major negative effects. Another study found that peer recovery coaching reduced the need for emergency and urgent health care visits, indicating its safety.

Although data specifically on middle school students is limited, findings in other age groups suggest that PCT is likely safe. Additionally, since this trial does not involve a new drug or invasive procedure, the risk of serious side effects is expected to be low.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about Peer Coach Training (PCT) because it offers a fresh approach to addressing problem behaviors in middle-school students. Unlike traditional methods that rely solely on standard behavioral services provided by schools, PCT involves training peers as coaches to provide immediate, relatable support. This peer-based strategy could lead to more effective and empathetic interventions, potentially improving student outcomes and fostering a more supportive school environment. By leveraging the influence of trained peers, PCT aims to create sustainable behavioral improvements through mutual understanding and shared experiences.

What evidence suggests that Peer Coach Training is effective for problem behavior?

Research has shown that Peer Coach Training (PCT) can improve behavior in young people with discipline issues. In this trial, trained research team members will deliver immediate PCT to participants in the experimental arm. PCT focuses on teaching positive skills, enabling young people to positively influence their peers. Rather than focusing on problems, it builds on strengths. A small study found that PCT worked well and was accepted in schools, suggesting successful implementation. Overall, PCT aims to empower youth through positive social activities, leading to better outcomes in school settings.26789
