What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a new method to help hospital staff communicate with families about vaccines, aiming to ensure more children receive their vaccines during hospital stays. The trial consists of three parts: usual care, electronic reminders for overdue vaccines, and staff training with a program called PIVOT-IN, a vaccine communication training program. It suits children currently in the hospital who are not in critical care and need vaccinations. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to enhance vaccine communication and potentially boost vaccination rates for hospitalized children.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for this trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.

What prior data suggests that this vaccine communication training is safe?

Research has shown that healthcare providers generally favor the PIVOT-IN training program. This program aids doctors and nurses in communicating more effectively with families about vaccines. In past studies, doctors found the training both useful and engaging. No reports have indicated any negative effects from the training itself. Since it focuses on communication, it does not involve any drugs or medical treatments. This suggests it is safe for healthcare providers to use when discussing vaccines with patients and their families.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the Vaccine Communication Training because it introduces a new method for improving vaccine uptake among hospitalized patients. Unlike traditional practices that might rely on passive reminders or standard counseling, this training involves actively teaching inpatient clinicians how to effectively communicate and initiate conversations about vaccines using the PIVOT-IN curriculum. This approach aims to enhance patient engagement and ensure that those who are due or overdue for vaccinations are identified and informed in a more systematic and persuasive manner. By focusing on communication, the trial hopes to uncover more effective ways to increase vaccination rates, which could lead to better preventive health outcomes.

What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for increasing vaccine uptake?

Research has shown that the PIVOT-IN training, included in this trial, helps healthcare providers communicate more effectively about vaccines with families. In this trial, some participants will receive Vaccine Communication Training using the PIVOT-IN curriculum. Studies have found that the PIVOT strategy, which involves starting vaccine conversations with confidence and using motivational interviewing (a method to encourage healthy choices), enhances communication. This approach has shown promise in increasing vaccination uptake. Early results indicate that healthcare providers trained with PIVOT-IN better recognize and address patient concerns about vaccines, making it a promising method for boosting vaccination rates during hospital stays.12567

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for children aged 0-17 who are hospitalized (not in intensive care) at Seattle Children's Hospital and are eligible to receive vaccines during their stay.

What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?

Interventions

  • PIVOT-IN

Trial Overview

The study compares a new training program called PIVOT-IN, which helps hospital staff talk with families about vaccines, against the usual way of checking if patients need vaccines. The goal is to see if better communication increases vaccination rates.
