FamilyCHESS for Opioid Addiction
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests a tool called FamilyCHESS, designed to help individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) begin and maintain medication for their condition. The study aims to determine if this text- and web-based support system, combined with support from a family member or friend, can improve treatment outcomes. Participants will either use FamilyCHESS or receive standard care treatments. Ideal candidates are those struggling with OUD who have not recently been on medication, have a supportive adult in their life, and own a smartphone.
As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative research that could enhance support systems for OUD treatment.
Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?
The trial requires that participants have not been on medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in the last 2 weeks. It doesn't specify about other medications, so it's best to discuss with the trial team.
What prior data suggests that the FamilyCHESS tool is safe for individuals with opioid use disorder?
Research has shown that FamilyCHESS is a text and web tool designed to assist individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) and their loved ones. Being digital, FamilyCHESS avoids the safety concerns associated with medications or physical treatments. No reports of negative effects exist because it is neither ingested nor a procedure.
FamilyCHESS aids in initiating and maintaining medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD). This approach is generally manageable as it emphasizes communication and support over direct medical intervention. The trial is labeled "Not Applicable" in terms of phase, indicating that safety concerns typical for new drugs or surgeries do not apply. In summary, FamilyCHESS is likely safe as it serves as a supportive tool rather than a drug or medical device.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
FamilyCHESS is unique because it integrates technology to support both individuals battling opioid addiction and their families. Unlike standard treatments that primarily focus on medication and therapy for individuals, FamilyCHESS offers a comprehensive digital health support system that promotes family involvement, enhancing the recovery process. This approach aims to strengthen the support network around the person in treatment, potentially leading to improved outcomes and sustained recovery. Researchers are excited about this method because it leverages the power of family dynamics and technology to create a more holistic and supportive treatment environment.
What evidence suggests that FamilyCHESS is effective for opioid use disorder?
Research has shown that involving family can effectively help treat opioid addiction. This is where FamilyCHESS plays a role. In this trial, participants will receive either FamilyCHESS—a tool designed to support people with opioid use disorder (OUD) by including a concerned family member—or standard care treatment for MOUD. Studies have demonstrated that family involvement can improve treatment outcomes and provide additional support. Although specific data on FamilyCHESS remains limited, evidence supports the idea that involving family in treatment leads to better follow-through and cost savings. This suggests that FamilyCHESS could be a promising tool for those dealing with OUD.14678
