What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

The trial aims to improve the eating habits of children and teens in low-income households by providing a weekly food box filled with nutritious items like proteins, fruits, and vegetables. The researchers seek to determine if these food boxes, combined with Nutrition Secure Indianapolis Nutrition Education, can enhance dietary quality and food security for families. Participants will share information about their eating habits and household food situation before and after the year-long trial. Families living in Indianapolis, with a child aged 5 to 18 attending school, and who can complete assessments, might be a good fit. As an unphased trial, this study offers families the opportunity to directly contribute to improving community health and nutrition.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It seems focused on dietary changes rather than medication use.

What prior data suggests that this food box intervention is safe for children and adolescents?

Research has shown that programs like the Nutrition Secure Indianapolis Food Box Intervention, which provide food boxes from food pantries, help improve people's diets. These boxes contain nutritious foods, including high-quality proteins, and are distributed to families in need. The main goal is to enhance diet quality and ensure food security for families. Studies have demonstrated positive responses from recipients, with no reports of negative effects, making these food boxes a safe choice for participants.

Additionally, the USDA's Food and Nutrition Administration supports these programs to ensure everyone can access healthy food. This support reflects confidence in the safety and effectiveness of food box programs to improve health without causing harm.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the Food Box and Nutrition Education for Healthy Eating trial because it offers a fresh approach to promoting healthy eating habits. Unlike traditional nutrition programs that may focus solely on education, this intervention provides participants with a weekly food box, directly addressing food insecurity and enabling access to nutritious foods. This method not only encourages healthy eating but also removes barriers by supplying the necessary resources, which could lead to more sustainable dietary changes. By integrating practical support with education, the trial aims to demonstrate a comprehensive method for improving nutrition in underserved communities.

What evidence suggests that the Nutrition Secure Indianapolis Program could be effective for improving dietary quality and food security?

Research has shown that programs based in food pantries, such as the Nutrition Secure Indianapolis Food Box, improve diet-related outcomes. In this trial, the intervention group will receive a weekly food box throughout the 1-year intervention period. Studies indicate that providing access to healthy foods and nutrition education leads to better eating habits and more reliable food access. For instance, one study found that nutrition education improved food security by 25% in households eligible for SNAP benefits over a year. Another program in Indianapolis demonstrated significant improvements in participants' health habits after receiving nutrition education. Overall, these programs suggest that similar approaches can effectively enhance diet quality and food security in low-income communities.16789
