Telehealth vs Traditional Rehab for Heart Attack
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests whether a new cardiac rehab program, called Telehealth-enhanced Hybrid CR, can improve adherence to treatment after a heart attack. Researchers aim to determine if this hybrid approach, which combines online, at-home, and clinic-based care, provides the same benefits as traditional cardiac rehabilitation. Individuals who experienced a heart attack in the past year, can attend outpatient rehab, and reside in New York State may qualify for this study. As an unphased trial, it presents a unique opportunity to explore innovative rehabilitation methods that could enhance recovery and convenience for heart attack patients.
Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.
What prior data suggests that this hybrid cardiac rehabilitation method is safe for heart attack patients?
Research has shown that using telehealth for hybrid cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is safe for people with heart conditions. Studies have found that most patients manage this type of program well. For instance, one study reported that 88.4% of patients completed at least 80% of their sessions, indicating the program's manageability and comfort. Another review of remote cardiac rehab programs found no significant increase in serious health issues over time, suggesting that telehealth is as safe as traditional in-person rehab programs.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the trial comparing Telehealth-enhanced Hybrid Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) to Traditional Clinic-based CR because it explores how technology can transform heart attack recovery. Unlike standard rehabilitation, which typically requires frequent in-person visits, the Telehealth model allows patients to receive care remotely, offering flexibility and convenience. This approach could make cardiac rehab more accessible to people with busy schedules or mobility issues. By potentially increasing participation rates and adherence, the Telehealth model might improve overall recovery outcomes for heart attack patients.
What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for heart attack recovery?
Research has shown that cardiac rehabilitation (CR) greatly improves heart health after a heart attack. This trial will compare two approaches: telehealth-enhanced hybrid CR and traditional clinic-based CR. Studies have found that a mix of online and in-person CR sessions, known as telehealth-enhanced hybrid CR, can be just as effective as traditional rehab. One review found that telehealth CR led to similar or even better heart health results compared to standard methods. Another study highlighted that telehealth CR increases accessibility and adherence to the program. This suggests that telehealth-based programs could help more patients complete their rehab, potentially leading to better recovery.13456

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for adults (18+) in New York State who had a heart attack or acute coronary syndrome within the past year, are eligible for outpatient cardiac rehab, and can read and speak English or Spanish.Inclusion Criteria
Timeline for a Trial Participant
Screening
Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial
Treatment
Participants undergo the TeleheartCR or Traditional CR program, which includes up to 36 sessions delivered through a combination of clinic-based and home-based sessions
Follow-up
Participants are monitored for program adherence, functional capacity, and health-related quality of life
What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?
Interventions
- Telehealth-enhanced Hybrid CR
- Traditional Cardiac Rehabilitation
Trial Overview
The study compares two types of cardiac rehab after a heart event: one uses telehealth plus home and clinic visits (TeleheartCR), while the other is traditional in-person rehab. Participants are randomly assigned to either group.
