What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores a home-based program called HOBSCOTCH, designed to help young people with epilepsy improve their thinking, memory, and overall quality of life. The study aims to determine if this program can enhance daily life for young adults and teens with epilepsy and reduce stress for their parents. Participants will attend weekly virtual sessions with a coach and maintain a daily diary using a smartphone app. It suits teens and young adults with epilepsy who have noticed issues with memory or attention and have access to a phone and the internet. As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity to contribute to research that could enhance daily living for young people with epilepsy.

What prior data suggests that the HOBSCOTCH program is safe for young adults and youth with epilepsy?

Studies have shown that the HOBSCOTCH program is safe and well-tolerated for people with epilepsy. Research indicates it improves memory and attention without causing harm. Specifically, one study found that participants who completed the HOBSCOTCH program experienced a 12.4-point improvement in their quality of life scores. Reports have not linked any side effects or negative outcomes to the program, which focuses on education, self-monitoring, and problem-solving to better manage epilepsy. This suggests that HOBSCOTCH is a safe option for enhancing cognitive function and quality of life in people with epilepsy.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the HOBSCOTCH program for epilepsy because it offers a personalized, cognitive behavioral approach that is not commonly found in traditional treatments like medications or surgical interventions. Unlike these standard options, which primarily focus on managing seizures through pharmaceutical means, HOBSCOTCH aims to improve the quality of life for young people with epilepsy by enhancing cognitive functions and emotional well-being. This program is delivered through a series of one-on-one sessions, either by webcam or phone, making it flexible and accessible for participants. By addressing the cognitive and emotional challenges associated with epilepsy, the HOBSCOTCH program could complement existing treatments and offer a more holistic approach to managing the condition.

What evidence suggests that the HOBSCOTCH program is effective for improving cognitive function and quality of life in young adults and youth with epilepsy?

Studies have shown that HOBSCOTCH, a self-management program for epilepsy, can improve thinking skills and quality of life. One study found that participants in the program experienced a 12.4-point increase in their quality-of-life scores compared to those who did not participate. The program targets individuals with epilepsy who face memory and attention challenges. Although the improvements in thinking skills and quality of life are significant, they may not persist beyond six months. In this trial, participants will receive the HOBSCOTCH program to manage memory and thinking challenges, aiming to help them regain control over their lives.13456
