What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to test the safety and feasibility of fetal cystoscopy to treat Lower Urinary Tract Obstruction (LUTO) in unborn male babies. The procedure uses special devices to relieve the obstruction before birth. The trial seeks pregnant women carrying a single male fetus with signs of LUTO, such as an enlarged bladder, between 16 and 25 weeks of pregnancy. Participants should not have other unrelated fetal anomalies or severe maternal health conditions. As an unphased trial, this study offers participants the chance to contribute to pioneering research that could improve outcomes for unborn babies with LUTO.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.

What prior data suggests that fetal cystoscopy is safe for treating lower urinary tract obstruction?

Research has shown that fetal cystoscopy is a promising treatment for lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO) in unborn babies. In this procedure, doctors use a tiny camera to examine the fetus's bladder and help clear blockages.

Early studies suggest that this treatment is generally safe and well-tolerated. Research has examined its safety and effectiveness, indicating that fetal cystoscopy can often be performed safely. However, like any medical procedure, potential risks exist. Some adverse events have been reported, though they are uncommon.

Before deciding to join a trial, discussing the risks and benefits with a healthcare provider is important to determine if this option is suitable for both mother and baby.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Unlike the standard treatments for congenital lower urinary tract obstruction, which often include bladder shunts or postnatal surgeries, fetal cystoscopy offers a novel approach by allowing direct visualization and intervention inside the womb. This technique could potentially reduce the risk of kidney damage and improve the baby's development before birth. Researchers are excited because it targets the problem earlier than current methods, possibly leading to better outcomes for both the baby and the mother.

What evidence suggests that fetal cystoscopy is effective for treating lower urinary tract obstruction?

Research has shown that fetal cystoscopy, the treatment under study in this trial, can effectively treat severe Lower Urinary Tract Obstruction (LUTO) when the fetus's kidney function remains good. This procedure allows doctors to directly visualize and address the blockage in the fetus's urinary tract. Evidence suggests that fetal cystoscopy accurately diagnoses the cause of LUTO in about 91% of cases, potentially improving outcomes. It offers a promising alternative to traditional methods like vesicoamniotic shunting, which involves placing a tube to drain urine. Although challenging, fetal cystoscopy's precision might help reduce the risks associated with LUTO.12567

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for pregnant women aged 18 or older carrying a single male fetus between 16 and almost 26 weeks, where the baby has signs of lower urinary tract blockage but no other major birth defects or chromosomal problems. The mother must understand and agree to join the study.

Inclusion Criteria

I am pregnant with one baby, and the baby is a boy.
* Able to perform the procedure at a gestational age between 16 0/7 and 25 6/7 weeks of gestation
* Lower urinary tract obstruction: Enlarged bladder (subjectively assessed), keyhole sign, bladder wall thickening (subjectively assessed), and bilateral hydro (uretero) nephrosis.27
