What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores whether virtual reality travel can reduce loneliness in older adults. Participants will either take a virtual tour of Bali or work on puzzles, allowing researchers to compare the effects. As a pilot study, the goal is to assess if the virtual reality experience is practical and enjoyable before conducting a larger study. This trial suits adults aged 65 and older who are interested in using VR technology and do not have conditions that make VR use unsafe. As an unphased trial, it offers a unique opportunity to explore innovative technology and contribute to research that could enhance the quality of life for older adults.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It seems focused on using virtual reality to reduce loneliness, so it's unlikely to require changes to your medication, but you should confirm with the trial organizers.

What prior data suggests that this virtual reality protocol is safe for older adults?

Research has shown that virtual reality (VR) is safe and generally easy for older adults to use. Studies have found that VR can help reduce loneliness and enhance feelings of connection. For instance, one study discovered that VR not only lessens feelings of loneliness but also strengthens social connections for older adults.

Reports of serious side effects from using VR are rare. Most people experience only mild issues, such as slight dizziness or eye strain, which usually resolve quickly. Therefore, VR is considered a safe way to help older adults feel less lonely.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about using virtual reality (VR) for addressing loneliness because it offers a unique and immersive experience that traditional treatments like therapy or medication don't provide. Unlike conventional methods, VR travel simulates an engaging environment, allowing users to virtually explore places like Bali Island, which can help reduce feelings of isolation by creating a sense of presence and connection. This innovative approach might be more appealing and accessible for individuals who are reluctant to seek traditional help or who benefit from a more interactive and engaging format.

What evidence suggests that virtual reality travel is effective for reducing loneliness?

Research has shown that virtual reality (VR) can help reduce loneliness in older adults. In this trial, participants in the virtual reality travel group will experience a VR tour of Bali Island, Indonesia. Studies have found that people using social VR felt less lonely and anxious about social situations. A review of several studies found that VR activities can positively affect feelings of isolation and loneliness in people aged 60 and over. Many older adults also reported feeling more connected after using VR. These findings suggest that VR experiences can improve emotional and social well-being among older adults.13678

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for older adults who may be experiencing loneliness and are interested in participating in activities using virtual reality or puzzles. Participants should be able to use VR equipment and follow study instructions.
