Tranexamic Acid for Knee Osteoarthritis
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to evaluate how well tranexamic acid (TXA) aids recovery after knee replacement surgery. The researchers seek to determine if taking TXA for a week post-surgery can enhance knee function, reduce pain, and lower the risk of complications over two years. Participants will take either TXA or a placebo (a pill with no active medicine) for seven days. The trial seeks individuals scheduled for knee replacement who have undergone a medical evaluation.
As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to contribute to medical research and potentially improve recovery outcomes for future knee replacement patients.
Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?
The trial does not specify if you need to stop all current medications, but you cannot participate if you are taking certain medications like anticoagulants other than aspirin, combined hormonal contraception, or specific blood-related treatments. It's best to discuss your current medications with the trial team to see if they affect your eligibility.
Is there any evidence suggesting that tranexamic acid is likely to be safe for humans?
A previous study demonstrated that tranexamic acid (TXA) is safe for patients undergoing total knee replacement surgery. Research shows that TXA reduces blood loss and the need for blood transfusions, aiding recovery. Additionally, several studies have found no significant increase in complications for patients using TXA compared to those who did not.
One study noted a decrease in the overall complication rate for patients who received TXA. Another found that using TXA after surgery may safely improve knee function and reduce pain. These findings suggest TXA is generally well-tolerated and does not lead to a higher risk of negative side effects.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Tranexamic acid is unique because it offers a fresh approach to managing knee osteoarthritis post-surgery. Unlike traditional treatments that primarily focus on pain relief and inflammation reduction, such as NSAIDs and corticosteroids, tranexamic acid works by reducing bleeding and swelling. This can potentially speed up recovery and improve joint function in the short term. Researchers are excited about its ability to minimize postoperative complications, providing a quicker and potentially more comfortable recovery for patients.
What evidence suggests that tranexamic acid might be an effective treatment for knee osteoarthritis?
Research has shown that tranexamic acid (TXA) works well for knee surgery patients. In this trial, participants will receive either TXA or a placebo. Studies have found that TXA reduces blood loss and the need for blood transfusions, aiding recovery. One study discovered that patients who took TXA could bend their knees more easily after surgery. Another study noted that TXA resulted in less swelling and higher patient satisfaction. Overall, TXA has proven to improve outcomes for those undergoing knee surgery.12678

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for adults (18 or older) scheduled to have their first knee replacement surgery due to osteoarthritis. Participants must be able to receive spinal anesthesia and certain medications before, during, and after surgery.Inclusion Criteria
Timeline for a Trial Participant
Screening
Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial
Treatment
Participants receive either extended oral TXA 1.95g daily or placebo for 7 days postoperatively
Follow-up
Participants are monitored for function, pain, and postoperative complications with evaluations at 6 weeks, 3 months, 12 months, and 24 months
What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?
Interventions
- Tranexamic acid
Trial Overview
The study compares taking oral tranexamic acid (TXA) daily for 7 days after knee replacement versus a placebo. It looks at pain, function, and complications over two years. Patients are randomly assigned to either group without knowing which they get.
