What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial examines how eating mangos daily for four weeks affects the gut and metabolism in teens. Participants will replace snacks like cookies and chips with Ataulfo mangos to assess any health changes. The trial includes two groups: one will eat mangos daily, and the other will not. Teens aged 12-19 who identify as Hispanic/Latino and have a BMI in the 85th percentile or higher may be suitable candidates. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to explore the potential health benefits of mangos in a supportive research environment.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

Yes, you will need to stop taking your current prescription medications, except for asthma inhalers, to participate in this trial.

What prior data suggests that Ataulfo mango intake is safe for adolescents?

Research has shown that mangos are generally safe to eat. One study found that eating mangos daily for 24 weeks helped lower blood sugar levels without major side effects. Another study discovered that consuming mangos daily for two weeks reduced blood pressure in healthy women. These findings suggest that mangos are well-tolerated and could be safe for regular consumption. However, individual reactions can vary, so consulting a doctor before making significant dietary changes is advisable.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Unlike traditional treatments for metabolic syndrome, which often include medications like metformin or statins to manage blood sugar and cholesterol levels, Ataulfo mango offers a natural alternative. Researchers are excited about this treatment because it introduces a new active ingredient: the bioactive compounds found in mangoes, which may help improve metabolic health. This approach is particularly appealing as it taps into the potential health benefits of whole foods, offering a more holistic and potentially less side-effect-prone option for managing the condition.

What evidence suggests that eating Ataulfo mangoes might be an effective treatment for metabolic syndrome?

Research has shown that eating mangos regularly can improve various aspects of metabolic health. In this trial, participants in the mango arm will consume Ataulfo mangos to evaluate their effects on metabolic syndrome. One study found that eating mangos daily helped adults with prediabetes manage their blood sugar levels better, improved their insulin response, and positively affected their body weight and fat. Another study found that mangos helped lower systolic blood pressure (the top number in readings) and reduced inflammation. Evidence also suggests that eating mangos can decrease insulin resistance, a common issue in many metabolic conditions. Overall, these studies suggest that adding mangos to the diet might benefit those with metabolic syndrome and related issues.15678
