What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores how sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprout extract and high-intensity exercise affect inflammation and metabolism. Participants will test three approaches: taking broccoli sprout extract, engaging in supervised high-intensity treadmill workouts, and combining both. Researchers will monitor basic health markers such as weight, heart rate, and blood pressure, along with blood samples before and after each method. This trial suits physically active individuals who do not smoke and have no history of certain diseases like asthma or diabetes. As an unphased trial, it offers participants the chance to contribute to groundbreaking research on natural health interventions.

Is there any evidence suggesting that this trial's treatments are likely to be safe?

Past studies have shown that broccoli sprout extract, rich in sulforaphane, is safe for up to six months. Most people tolerate it well, experiencing only mild side effects like increased gas, constipation, or diarrhea in some cases.

Researchers have extensively studied high-intensity interval treadmill running (HIIT). It effectively improves health but can increase the risk of injuries, particularly to the knees and shoulders. Many find HIIT beneficial, but caution is necessary to prevent injuries.

Overall, past research has demonstrated the safety of both broccoli sprout extract and HIIT, though individual experiences may vary.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about these treatments because they combine natural and physical interventions to tackle inflammation. Unlike standard treatments that often rely on anti-inflammatory medications, this approach uses sulforaphane, a compound found in broccoli sprout extract, known for its antioxidant properties. Combined with high-intensity interval training, which can enhance cardiovascular health and reduce inflammation, this dual strategy may offer a more holistic and rapid way to manage inflammation. By potentially reducing inflammation in just four days, these treatments could provide a quicker and more natural alternative to conventional options.

What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for inflammation?

This trial will explore the effects of sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprout extract and high-intensity interval treadmill running on inflammation. Studies have shown that broccoli sprout extracts, rich in sulforaphane, can significantly reduce signs of inflammation in the body. For example, one study found a noticeable drop in a blood marker of inflammation called hs-CRP after participants took the extract for a few weeks. Research suggests that high-intensity interval training (HIIT), such as treadmill running, improves heart health and can positively affect inflammation. Although the inflammation marker IL-8 increases after HIIT, the overall benefits for heart health and managing inflammation are promising. This trial will assess the effects of sulforaphane supplementation alone, exercise alone, and their combined effects on inflammation.12467

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for healthy adults who are willing to avoid structured exercise, alcohol, and broccoli during the study periods. Participants must be able to do high-intensity treadmill running and take a broccoli sprout extract supplement.

What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?

Interventions

  • High Intensity Interval Treadmill Running
  • Sulforaphane-rich Broccoli Sprout Extract

Trial Overview

The study tests the effects of short-term sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprout extract, high-intensity interval treadmill running, and their combination on metabolism and inflammation. Each participant tries all three interventions in random order with breaks between them.
