What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores a unique spiritual therapy designed to help cancer patients manage stress and loss of purpose often associated with their diagnosis. The therapy, called PATH, employs techniques like role-playing and group discussions to address spiritual and existential concerns. Cancer patients experiencing spiritual or religious distress might find this therapy beneficial. Participants will attend individual and group therapy sessions over several weeks to determine if this approach improves their overall sense of well-being. As an unphased trial, this study provides patients the opportunity to explore innovative therapeutic approaches that may enhance their spiritual well-being and quality of life.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It focuses on spiritual therapy, so it's likely you can continue your usual treatments, but you should confirm with the trial coordinators.

What prior data suggests that this spiritual therapy is safe for cancer patients?

Research has shown that spiritual therapy is generally safe for cancer patients. Studies have found that spiritual support can enhance emotional and spiritual well-being and often reduces anxiety and depression. No strong evidence indicates that spiritual therapy harms cancer patients. A review of several studies found that these therapies improved patients' quality of life without major risks. This suggests that spiritual therapy might be a safe choice for those seeking to address spiritual or existential concerns during cancer treatment.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about Spiritual Therapy for cancer because it introduces a holistic approach that complements traditional treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. Unlike standard medical treatments that focus solely on the physical aspects of cancer, Spiritual Therapy aims to support emotional and mental well-being, which can be crucial for overall health and recovery. By incorporating individual and group PATH sessions, this therapy fosters a sense of community and personal reflection, potentially enhancing patients' quality of life during their cancer journey.

What evidence suggests that this spiritual therapy is effective for cancer-related distress?

Studies have shown that spiritual interventions can boost cancer patients' spiritual well-being and quality of life. They may also reduce feelings of depression, anxiety, and hopelessness. Some research suggests a link between spiritual and religious support and better immune function, less fatigue, and improved emotional coping. Many patients experience a sense of calm and hope through these interventions, aiding them in continuing their treatment. Spiritual interventions enhance hope and resilience and improve emotional, physical, and social well-being. Overall, these therapies provide a meaningful way to address the distress often accompanying a cancer diagnosis. Participants in this trial will engage in a specific spiritual therapy program called PATH, which includes individual and group sessions designed to support these outcomes.26789
