What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests an online tool called Chart to determine if it helps local health departments better plan for extreme heat. Chart offers specific risk assessments and suggests effective heat-health interventions for various areas. Researchers aim to discover if using Chart enhances the management of heat-related activities compared to relying on basic information alone. The trial seeks local health departments with some control over their heat-health programs and staff available to participate. As an unphased trial, this study allows participants to contribute to innovative solutions for managing extreme heat in their communities.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether participants need to stop taking their current medications.

What prior data suggests that this online decision support platform is safe for use in health departments?

In this trial, the treatment involves an online decision support platform called Chart. As a "Not Applicable" phase trial, it lacks direct safety information from past studies. However, the primary concerns focus on usability and data protection rather than physical safety.

Online platforms like Chart are generally safe because they do not involve medications or medical procedures. Instead, they offer information and guidance. Users interact with a computer or mobile device to receive insights and recommendations, eliminating the risk of physical side effects associated with other treatments.

In summary, the trial emphasizes the platform's ease of use and data security. As an online tool, it is expected to be very safe for participants.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the Decision Support Platform for Heat-Related Health Risks because it offers a novel way to tackle heat-health challenges. Unlike traditional methods that mainly provide general information on heat risks, this platform delivers tailored risk assessments specific to local areas and links them with actionable strategies. The platform not only helps users understand the specific heat risks they face but also guides policymakers with data-driven insights on the effectiveness, timing, and costs of different interventions. This targeted, data-centric approach could significantly improve how communities prepare for and respond to heat-related health risks.

What evidence suggests that this decision support platform is effective for heat-related health risks?

Research has shown that the Chart tool, an online platform, can help manage health risks related to heat. In this trial, participants in the intervention group will engage with the Chart tool through facilitated sessions. Studies indicate that it uses 25 different factors to estimate heat risk in specific areas, including weather data, health vulnerabilities, and possible actions to take. The Chart tool assists local health departments by providing specific advice on reducing heat risks. It aims to enhance how these departments prepare for and respond to extreme heat events, making planning and response to heat-related health threats easier and more effective.678910

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for staff members (age 18 or older) working at local city or county health departments in the US that have some independence to plan and carry out heat-health programs. The department must have a staff member available to participate throughout the study.

Inclusion Criteria

I work for a local health department and help plan programs for extreme heat.

Timeline for a Trial Participant

Screening

Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial

2-4 weeks

Baseline Assessment

All departments will undertake the pre-intervention baseline assessment to gather information related to organizational demographics, current activities, and implementation factors.

Baseline

Intervention

Facilitated engagement with the Chart platform, including an introduction, real-time Q&A, and discussions on priority interventions and planning needs.

Several weeks to several months

Post-intervention Survey

Assessment of meaningful changes in demographics and organizational activities eight months after the intervention begins.

8 months

Follow-up

Participants are monitored for the effectiveness of the intervention and implementation outcomes through key informant interviews.

Trial Overview

The study compares an online decision support tool called Chart, which helps health departments assess and prepare for extreme heat risks, against just receiving standard information about heat-health preparedness. Departments are randomly assigned to either group.
