What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores whether cinematic virtual reality (VR) can teach medical students about caring for older adults more effectively than traditional classroom lectures. The VR training provides realistic patient scenarios, helping students manage complex medical issues and improve patient care using osteopathic principles, which focus on holistic treatment. Researchers will compare students' clinical skills performance after using either the VR or traditional lecture method. Eligible participants are medical students at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine for the 2025-2026 academic year who can read and speak English. As an unphased study, this trial offers students a unique opportunity to enhance their learning experience with innovative technology.

Do I need to stop taking my current medications for this trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It seems focused on medical training rather than medication use.

What prior data suggests that cinematic virtual reality training is safe for medical students?

Research has shown that using cinematic virtual reality (VR) for training is generally safe. Several studies have explored its application in medical education. One study found that healthcare professionals enjoyed learning with VR and experienced no major negative effects. Another study discovered that VR training was popular and enhanced participants' awareness and empathy. These findings suggest that VR training is well-tolerated and a safe choice for those considering such programs.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the cinematic virtual reality training because it offers an immersive learning experience unlike any traditional methods. Most current options for medical training rely on didactic lectures and textbooks, which can be less engaging. The virtual reality approach allows participants to interact with realistic scenarios involving older adults with complex health needs, potentially enhancing their understanding and empathy. This innovative method could revolutionize how medical professionals are trained, leading to better patient care and outcomes.

What evidence suggests that cinematic virtual reality training is effective for medical students learning geriatric care?

Studies have shown that cinematic virtual reality (VR) can be a powerful tool in medical education. Research indicates that VR often surpasses traditional teaching methods by immersing students in realistic scenarios. For example, VR has successfully taught skills like surgery and anatomy. In this trial, participants in the cinematic virtual reality training arm will experience this immersive approach. Early findings suggest it can increase empathy and awareness among healthcare providers, making VR a promising method for teaching future doctors how to care for older adults with complex needs. Meanwhile, participants in the traditional didactic lecture arm will receive conventional instruction on geriatric care.13467
