What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores the usefulness of auto-captioning glasses for individuals with hearing loss due to NF2-related schwannomatosis, a genetic disorder causing tumors that affect hearing. Participants will wear these glasses for 12 weeks to understand spoken words through captions. The trial aims to determine if these glasses are easy to use and beneficial. Individuals diagnosed with NF2-related schwannomatosis who have reported hearing loss might be suitable candidates for this study. As an unphased trial, it offers a unique opportunity for participants to contribute to innovative solutions for hearing loss.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What prior data suggests that these auto-captioning glasses are safe for adults with hearing loss?

Research has shown that auto-captioning glasses can assist people with hearing loss by displaying real-time captions. These glasses are generally safe, and studies have not reported any major problems associated with their use. The technology in these glasses resembles that of other helpful devices like hearing aids, which most people use without issues.

Additionally, the FDA has approved some smart glasses that enhance sound and vision for sale without a prescription, indicating their safety. Although specific information on negative reactions to auto-captioning glasses is limited, their non-invasive design and similarity to other approved devices suggest they are safe.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about auto-captioning glasses because they offer a novel approach to assist individuals with hearing loss, specifically those with NF2-SWN. Unlike traditional hearing aids or cochlear implants that amplify sound, these glasses convert spoken words into text in real time, allowing users to read conversations as they happen. This innovative method provides an accessible solution for people who might not benefit from amplification devices, particularly in noisy environments. The combination of visual aid and mobility makes these glasses a unique and promising tool for enhancing communication for those with hearing impairments.

What evidence suggests that auto-captioning glasses are effective for hearing loss?

Research has shown that auto-captioning glasses can help people with hearing loss understand conversations better. In one study, 90% of users found the captions easy to follow, enabling them to keep up with spoken words more easily. These glasses use special microphones and smart technology to quickly convert speech into text, usually in less than a second. People with hearing difficulties have reported feeling more connected to others when using similar captioning tools. In this trial, adults with NF2-SWN and hearing loss will use the auto-captioning glasses for 12 weeks, potentially offering a promising way for those with hearing loss to engage more fully in everyday life.12367
