Health Coaching for Intellectual Disabilities
(HEALTH 4 ME Trial)
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to determine if combining health coaching with educational activities can enhance health and access to healthcare for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Participants will either join a new program called Comprehensive Community Health or continue with regular Special Olympics activities. This trial suits those involved in Special Olympics, who have intellectual or developmental disabilities, and receive weekly support from a family member or caregiver who can participate. As an unphased trial, it provides a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative healthcare approaches for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.
What prior data suggests that this health coaching method is safe for adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities?
Research on the Comprehensive Community Health (CCH) approach, particularly for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, offers insights into its safety and effectiveness. Although the studies reviewed do not provide specific safety data, they report no harmful effects, suggesting that CCH treatment is generally safe.
These studies aim to improve health and make healthcare more accessible, without highlighting major safety concerns. One study demonstrated that comprehensive interventions could assist with daily activities and behaviors. While detailed safety information is absent, the lack of negative reports implies the treatment is safe for participants.
The "Not Applicable" label for this trial phase likely indicates that the treatment is non-invasive, focusing on education or support. This typically presents a lower risk of physical harm compared to treatments involving drugs or surgery. Therefore, participants may find this approach both safe and beneficial for enhancing their health and access to healthcare.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the Comprehensive Community Health (CCH) intervention because it aims to provide a more integrated approach to health coaching for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Unlike standard care, which often focuses solely on Special Olympics sport and health programming, CCH offers a broader range of community-based health services. This holistic approach could address various health needs more effectively, potentially improving overall well-being and quality of life for participants. The integration of diverse health resources makes CCH an innovative step forward in supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities.
What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for improving health outcomes and healthcare access for adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities?
This trial will compare the Comprehensive Community Health (CCH) Intervention with the Standard of Care for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Studies have shown that adults with IDD often experience worse health than those without these disabilities, facing higher rates of long-term illnesses like diabetes and more mental health issues. The CCH Intervention aims to enhance their health through customized health check-ups and support. Early results suggest these programs can address communication problems and improve overall health management. By focusing on personalized care, the CCH Intervention seeks to improve health outcomes for people with IDD.23678
