What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores the MH-POWER program, a new mental health initiative for college students on the autism spectrum who experience stress, anxiety, or depression. The program combines strategies from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and habit formation to help manage these challenges. Participants will attend weekly sessions and practice daily over eight weeks to determine if these methods improve mental health. Students at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with an autism diagnosis who feel stressed or anxious and are not undergoing other intensive treatments might be a good fit. Positive results could lead to wider availability of this program. As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative mental health solutions tailored for students on the autism spectrum.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial does not specify if you need to stop taking your current medications, but it mentions that participants should not be undergoing psychiatric medication adjustments. It's best to discuss your specific situation with the trial coordinators.

What prior data suggests that the MH-POWER program is safe for college students on the autism spectrum?

Research has shown that the MH-POWER program helps college students with autism manage stress, anxiety, and depression. This program uses cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), both well-known and generally safe mental health treatments. Although these therapies typically don't cause serious side effects, some participants might feel discomfort as they work through challenging thoughts and feelings.

The MH-POWER program is not a medication and thus avoids the risks associated with drug trials. Instead, it focuses on building skills and empowering participants through therapy, which generally carries a low risk of harm. While specific data on negative effects for this program is unavailable, similar therapies are often well-tolerated.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the MH-POWER program for Autism Spectrum Disorder because it offers a novel approach that focuses on personalized support and empowerment. Unlike traditional treatments, which often involve medication or standard behavioral therapies, MH-POWER aims to tailor its strategies to each individual's unique needs, potentially leading to more effective outcomes. By emphasizing empowerment and personal growth, this program could provide individuals with autism spectrum disorder the tools to navigate their daily lives more independently and confidently.

What evidence suggests that the MH-POWER program is effective for autism spectrum?

Research has shown that programs using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) can assist individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). These therapies aim to enhance coping skills and reduce stress and anxiety. Studies have found that CBT helps manage anxiety and depression by altering negative thought patterns. ACT encourages acceptance of feelings and actions aligned with personal values. The MH-POWER program, which participants in this trial will receive, is based on these proven therapies and may improve mental health symptoms for college students with ASD.56789
