STARSTIM Device for Memory

(STIM Trial)

No Placebo GroupAll trial participants will receive the active study treatment (no placebo)

What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores how the STARSTIM device can aid memory and cognitive control, which involves how the brain manages tasks and retains information. The study will test various methods of using the device to determine the most effective approach. Participants will receive either the STARSTIM treatment, a non-invasive brain stimulation device, or a placebo version with no effect. Suitable candidates for this trial should be fluent in English, have normal or corrected-to-normal vision, and no history of serious head injuries or seizures. As an unphased trial, this study offers participants the chance to contribute to innovative research that could enhance cognitive health.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

You may need to stop taking certain medications to participate in this trial. Specifically, you cannot take anticonvulsant, anti-epileptic, benzodiazepines, certain psychiatric medications, or medications for cardiac conditions, and you must not have changed any psychiatric medications in the past 3 months.

What prior data suggests that the STARSTIM Device is safe for memory studies?

Previous studies have shown that the STARSTIM device generally causes manageable side effects, whether used in-phase or anti-phase. Research indicates that users experience only slight discomfort during treatments. Evidence suggests that both methods of using the STARSTIM device safely enhance mental abilities, such as memory and thinking skills. These studies demonstrate that the device can be used without major negative effects, making it a promising option for those considering participation in related clinical trials.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the STARSTIM device treatments because they offer a novel approach to enhancing memory by using brain stimulation techniques. Unlike traditional memory treatments, which often involve medication or cognitive therapy, the STARSTIM device applies electrical stimulation in either an in-phase or anti-phase manner to potentially improve memory functions. This non-invasive method targets brain waves directly, which could lead to quicker and more targeted outcomes without the side effects commonly associated with drugs. With the potential for precision in modulating brain activity, these treatments might revolutionize how we approach memory enhancement.

What evidence suggests that the STARSTIM Device is effective for memory?

This trial will compare different methods of using the STARSTIM device to improve memory and thinking skills. Participants will receive either in-phase or anti-phase stimulation, or a sham treatment. Research has shown that the STARSTIM device, particularly with in-phase stimulation, may enhance memory and thinking skills. Studies have found that transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) at certain frequencies can boost working memory and decision-making abilities. Aligning brain activity with the device might be crucial for enhancing these skills.

For anti-phase stimulation, research suggests that methods like transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can enhance various cognitive abilities. Evidence indicates improvements in memory and attention by adjusting brain activity. Overall, both treatment methods have demonstrated positive effects on thinking skills in earlier studies.12678

What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?

Interventions

  • STARSTIM Device anti-phase
  • STARSTIM Device in-phase

Trial Overview

The study tests how different settings of a brain stimulation device (STARSTIM in-phase, STARSTIM anti-phase) compared to a sham (inactive) device affect memory and cognitive control. Participants are randomly assigned to one of the groups.
