Music Therapy for Childhood Cancer
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial explores how learning to play the ukulele might enhance brain function in teens undergoing radiation treatment for cancer. Radiation can sometimes cause cognitive challenges, and music therapy could provide a fun and effective solution. The trial includes weekly virtual ukulele lessons and encourages independent practice. This music therapy is part of the Strengthening Teen Brain Resilience Using Music (STRUM) intervention. Eligible teens have not previously taken ukulele or guitar lessons and are receiving their first round of radiation treatment at Mayo Clinic Arizona. Participants need access to a device capable of handling video calls. As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity to explore innovative ways to support cognitive health during cancer treatment.
What prior data suggests that the STRUM intervention is safe for adolescents undergoing radiation therapy?
Research has shown that music therapy is generally safe and well-tolerated for children and teens undergoing cancer treatment. Studies have found that it can reduce pain, enhance comfort, and lower stress levels. No major reports of harmful side effects from music therapy sessions exist. Importantly, music therapy has been linked to better quality of life, improved coping skills, and increased resilience. These findings suggest that participating in this therapy is not only safe but also beneficial for mental and emotional well-being.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the STRUM intervention because it's a fresh, non-medical approach to supporting kids with cancer by using music to boost mental resilience. Unlike traditional treatments that focus primarily on physical symptoms, STRUM offers virtual ukulele lessons that are designed to be fun and engaging, potentially helping to reduce stress and improve mood. This method is unique because it encourages creativity and self-expression, which can be empowering for young patients amidst their challenging treatment journeys.
What evidence suggests that the STRUM intervention is effective for improving cognitive decline in adolescents undergoing radiation therapy for cancer?
Research has shown that music therapy can benefit children and teens with cancer. Studies have found it improves their ability to handle challenges, interact with others, and relate to their families. Music therapy also reduces stress and anxiety, common during cancer treatment. Additionally, music activities enhance memory and emotional health, potentially counteracting the mental decline sometimes caused by radiation therapy. This trial will evaluate the STRUM program, which includes ukulele lessons, to determine if it offers similar benefits for teens undergoing cancer treatment.23678

Experimental Treatment
Patients receive a ukulele, tuner, and songbook and attend virtually delivered ukulele lessons over 30 minutes each, once weekly, for 10 weeks. Intervention sessions are structured with stair-stepping difficulty with each lesson concluding with learning a new song. Ten optional supplemental video-recorded lessons (approximately 15 minutes each) will be available for patients to view asynchronously and use for independent practice between weekly sessions. Patients are encouraged to practice their skills independently for at least 90 minutes per week. At the conclusion of the study, patients may attend an optional virtual "Encore Concert Event" remotely, featuring audio-video clips compiled from participants' lessons.
