What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to determine if mindfulness and meditation techniques can improve breastmilk for mothers pumping for their newborns in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). It compares two groups: one receives mindfulness-based lactation education (a mindfulness-based intervention), while the other receives standard care. Mothers who have given birth at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, have infants in the NICU, and pump breastmilk at least eight times a day within 72 hours of birth may be suitable candidates. This trial excludes those with extensive mindfulness experience or certain medical conditions, such as a history of breast surgery or PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome).

As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity to explore innovative techniques that could enhance the breastfeeding experience and support newborn health.

Do I need to stop my current medications for this trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What prior data suggests that mindfulness-based interventions are safe for breastfeeding mothers in the NICU?

Research has shown that mindfulness practices are generally safe for mothers. In studies, mothers who practiced mindfulness and meditation while breastfeeding reported feeling less stressed and found it easier to produce milk. This suggests these techniques are well-tolerated.

One study found that relaxation therapy, similar to mindfulness, helped mothers produce more milk. It also supported the baby's weight gain and reduced stress for the mothers. These results indicate a positive experience without major side effects.

Overall, early findings suggest mindfulness techniques might help mothers both mentally and physically, with no major safety concerns reported.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the mindfulness-based intervention for breastfeeding in the NICU because it introduces a psychological approach to enhance lactation support. Unlike the standard care, which focuses solely on medical and educational support, this intervention incorporates mindfulness techniques that may help mothers manage stress and improve their breastfeeding experience. By promoting relaxation and mental well-being, the mindfulness-based approach could potentially lead to better outcomes for both mothers and their babies, offering an innovative layer of support not typically addressed by standard lactation programs.

What evidence suggests that mindfulness-based intervention is effective for breastfeeding in NICU?

Research shows that mindfulness and meditation can help mothers express breast milk more easily. One study found that mothers who practiced mindfulness produced more milk and felt less stressed. Another study showed that relaxation techniques increased milk production and even helped babies gain weight. In this trial, mothers in the mindfulness-based arm will receive mindfulness-based lactation education, which might make breastfeeding easier for mothers with babies in the NICU. The evidence is promising for using mindfulness to support breastfeeding success.12367
