Meditation App for Mental Health
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial explores whether a meditation app can effectively improve mental health in young people within the juvenile legal system. Participants will use one of two apps: an experimental meditation app called Bodhi AIM or a health promotion app named HIB. The goal is to determine if young people consistently use the meditation app for a month. It targets individuals aged 13-20 in probation programs in Oregon or New York who have a smartphone. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity for participants to contribute to innovative mental health solutions tailored to their age group.
Is there any evidence suggesting that this trial's treatments are likely to be safe?
Research has shown that meditation apps like Bodhi AIM are generally safe and easy to use. Many people use these apps for mental health support without significant issues. Studies indicate that Bodhi AIM is popular among professionals working with young people in the legal system. These professionals report that the app helps them manage stress, and no major safety concerns have been reported. Overall, meditation apps are considered a safe option for improving mental well-being.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the Bodhi AIM meditation app because it leverages technology to deliver mental health support in a unique way. Unlike traditional therapies that often require in-person sessions, Bodhi AIM offers a meditation-based approach that can be accessed anytime and anywhere via a smartphone. This makes it highly accessible and convenient, potentially broadening the reach of mental health resources. Additionally, its focus on meditation as a primary tool for improving mental health is a fresh approach compared to the more common use of medication or cognitive behavioral therapy.
What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for mental health?
Research has shown that meditation apps like Bodhi AIM, which participants in this trial may receive, can improve mental health by reducing anxiety and depression. Specifically, users of the app reported feeling 82% less anxious after just 10 sessions, averaging about 63 days. Studies also indicate that these apps can lower stress, improve sleep, and reduce feelings of loneliness. Additionally, a review of multiple studies found that mindfulness meditation apps can boost overall well-being. These findings suggest that Bodhi AIM could be a helpful tool for improving mental health in various situations. Meanwhile, participants in the active control arm of this trial will receive the HIB health promotion app.12678
