What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests an online program called Online Parent Training in Early Behavioral Intervention (OPT-In-Early), which helps parents support young children who might have autism while awaiting a formal diagnosis. The program provides easy-to-use resources and guidance to enhance children's social, language, and everyday skills through evidence-based methods. It targets parents of children aged 16 to 48 months who are on a waitlist for autism evaluation and have shown signs of autism on a common screening checklist. Participants will either receive immediate access to the online training or remain on the waitlist for six months before accessing it. As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity for parents to access valuable resources that could benefit their children during the crucial early developmental period.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It focuses on an online training program for parents, so it's unlikely to require changes to your child's medication.

What prior data suggests that this online parent training program is safe and effective?

Research has shown that the OPT-In-Early program is safe and easy to use. In a previous study, parents who participated in the program learned more about proven autism treatments and observed improvements in their children's behavior and skills without major issues. Additionally, research by Diaz-Stransky and colleagues found that disruptive behavior significantly improved after parents completed the online training. As an online learning tool rather than a medication or medical procedure, this program carries very low risk. Participants primarily use online materials and can join optional support calls, which are generally safe.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the Online Parent Training in Early Behavioral Intervention (OPT-In-Early) because it offers a flexible and accessible way for parents to learn effective strategies for supporting children with autism. Unlike traditional in-person therapies, this program is entirely online and self-directed, allowing caregivers to access the training modules at their own pace and schedule. Additionally, it includes optional support calls with clinicians, providing personalized guidance and enhancing the learning experience. This combination of online resources and professional support aims to empower parents, improve children's skills, and reduce challenging behaviors, making it a promising alternative to conventional methods.

What evidence suggests that the Online Parent Training in Early Behavioral Intervention (OPT-In-Early) is effective for autism?

Research has shown that the OPT-In-Early program, which participants in this trial may receive, can benefit parents of children with autism. Parents who used the program observed improvements in their children's language, social, and everyday skills. They also found the program easy to understand, enjoyable, and helpful in teaching useful strategies. One study found that parents who participated in OPT-In-Early learned more proven methods compared to those who did not. This suggests that the program could help parents better support their children's development while awaiting a formal autism diagnosis.26789

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for caregivers of toddlers aged 16-48 months who are on a waitlist for an autism diagnosis. The children must show signs of autism likelihood based on the M-CHAT-R/F assessment, and parents must speak English and provide consent.

An initial score of 8 or greater or Follow-Up score of 2 or greater on the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised, with Follow-Up (M-CHAT-R/F; Robins et al., 2014) as an indication of autism likelihood.
