Mindfulness-Based Intervention for Autism
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial explores whether a mindfulness-based program can reduce depression and anxiety in autistic teens. Participants will either attend weekly online group meetings and use a meditation app or use the app daily for eight weeks. Researchers aim to determine which approach more effectively eases depression and anxiety. Adolescents aged 13 to 18 with an autism diagnosis who can attend most group meetings are well-suited for this trial. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to contribute to understanding how mindfulness can benefit autistic teens.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.
What prior data suggests that this mindfulness-based intervention is safe for autistic adolescents?
Research has shown that mindfulness programs, such as the MINDful TIME program, are generally safe for autistic teens and their caregivers. Studies have found these programs to be well-received, with no serious side effects reported. One study found that MINDful TIME makes mindfulness techniques more accessible for teens with autism and their families. Another review suggests that mindfulness programs can enhance social skills and reduce stress in children with autism and their parents. Overall, evidence indicates that these programs are safe and can positively impact emotional and social well-being without significant risks.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Unlike traditional treatments for autism, which often involve behavioral therapies and medications aimed at managing symptoms, the MINDful TIME approach focuses on using mindfulness techniques to improve emotional regulation and social skills. Researchers are excited about this treatment because it offers a non-invasive, holistic alternative that emphasizes self-awareness and stress reduction, which could lead to broader improvements in daily functioning. Additionally, the use of a Mindfulness Mobile App as an active comparator provides a digital and accessible way for individuals to engage with the intervention, potentially increasing its reach and effectiveness.
What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for reducing depression and anxiety in autistic adolescents?
Research has shown that mindfulness-based programs can assist autistic individuals facing mental health challenges. Studies have found that these programs significantly reduce stress in parents of autistic children and enhance the children's social skills. This trial will compare two mindfulness-based interventions: the MINDful TIME program and a Mindfulness Mobile App. Early results suggest that the MINDful TIME program, in particular, shows promise in boosting mindfulness skills in autistic teens. In a previous study, 90% of participants and their parents found the MINDful TIME program helpful. Overall, mindfulness techniques can reduce anxiety and depression, making them a valuable tool for autistic adolescents.13678
