Mobile App for Autism
(BU Trial)
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to determine if a special autism-friendly app, the Brush Down App, can help children and teens with autism improve their toothbrushing habits. It compares this app with a basic version, the Brush Up App, which includes only a digital mirror and countdown timer. Participants will use one of the apps for three months and complete surveys about their brushing habits and oral health. The trial seeks children with autism who can mostly brush their teeth independently and use touchscreen devices like iPads or smartphones. As an unphased trial, this study offers participants a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative solutions tailored for autism care.
Do I need to stop my current medications for this trial?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It seems focused on using a mobile app for toothbrushing, so it's unlikely that your medications would be affected.
What prior data suggests that this mobile app is safe for children and teens with autism?
Studies have shown that using mobile apps to help children, including those with autism, brush their teeth is generally safe. Research has not identified any harmful effects. The Brush Up app, designed to be autism-friendly, aims to improve toothbrushing habits in children with autism spectrum disorder. Although specific safety data is limited, existing evidence suggests that users tolerate these apps well.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the Brush Up App for autism because it uniquely leverages technology to support social and communication skills. Unlike traditional therapies, which often require in-person sessions with therapists, this app provides a digital, accessible method for families to engage in therapeutic activities. The app is designed to be used at home, making it more convenient and potentially reducing the barriers to consistent treatment. By integrating therapy into daily routines, the Brush Up App offers a flexible and engaging way to support individuals with autism.
What evidence suggests that this app is effective for improving toothbrushing outcomes in children with autism?
Research has shown that the Brush Up app, which participants in this trial may use, can help children with autism improve their toothbrushing habits. In one study, children using a similar app improved their brushing routine by 18.8%, outperforming those who didn't use the app. Another study found that the Brush Up app led to cleaner teeth, with less visible plaque. Mobile health apps like Brush Up also make brushing easier and less stressful for caregivers. These findings suggest that the Brush Up app could be a helpful tool for children with autism to develop better toothbrushing habits. Meanwhile, participants in the control arm will use the Brush Down app, serving as a comparison in this trial.12346

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for children and teens ages 8-17 with autism who can brush their teeth mostly on their own, use touchscreen devices, live with a caregiver (age 18+), and both can communicate in English. The caregiver must have email access. Both need to agree to participate.Inclusion Criteria
Timeline for a Trial Participant
