What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores whether Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY) breath meditation can reduce stress and improve well-being among university students. Participants will join either a SKY group for meditation and yoga or a control group practicing general yoga without special breathing exercises. The study aims to determine if SKY can boost physical activity, reduce stress, and enhance focus and social connections. Students currently enrolled at a university in Alabama who can attend a three-day retreat and weekly online sessions may qualify to participate. As an unphased study, this trial offers students a unique opportunity to explore innovative stress-reduction techniques and contribute to research that could benefit future university communities.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.

What prior data suggests that SKY Breath Meditation is safe for university students?

Research has shown that SKY Breath Meditation is generally safe for people. In one study involving 129 doctors, SKY reduced stress, anxiety, and depression, with no major negative effects reported, indicating it is well-tolerated. Another study found improvements in mental health, mindfulness, and social connections without any serious side effects. With over 189 studies from various institutions supporting its benefits, SKY Breath Meditation is considered a low-risk practice that can enhance well-being.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about SKY Breath Meditation for stress because it offers a holistic approach that differs from traditional stress management methods like medication or cognitive behavioral therapy. SKY Breath Meditation focuses on specific breathing techniques, which can help calm the nervous system and reduce stress without the need for pharmaceuticals. This practice is accessible, can be done at home, and may offer quick relief, making it an appealing option for those looking for non-drug interventions to manage stress. Additionally, the combination of a 3-day retreat with ongoing online sessions provides both an immersive experience and continued support, potentially leading to more sustainable stress reduction results.

What evidence suggests that SKY Breath Meditation is effective for stress?

Research has shown that SKY Breath Meditation helps reduce stress and anxiety. In one study with 129 doctors, participants experienced significant reductions in stress, anxiety, and depression after practicing SKY. Another study found improvements in mental health, mindfulness, and social connections, identifying SKY as the most effective breathing program for enhancing overall mental well-being. With over 189 studies supporting its benefits, SKY Breath Meditation has proven to significantly lower stress levels. In this trial, participants in the intervention group will engage in a SKY breath meditation retreat, weekly online sessions, and home practice. Meanwhile, the control group will receive online yoga videos to practice at least three times a week. These findings suggest that SKY can be a valuable tool for improving mental health and resilience.12678
