What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores whether listening to binaural beats—special audio tones—can reduce pain and anxiety after knee or hip surgery. Participants will either listen to a 30-minute session of these beats or choose their own music during recovery. It targets individuals receiving spinal anesthesia and a nerve block, who do not have severe hearing issues or use hearing aids. The goal is to determine if this audio therapy can make recovery more comfortable. As an unphased trial, the study provides a unique opportunity to explore innovative methods for enhancing recovery comfort.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.

What prior data suggests that this binaural beats audio intervention is safe for postoperative pain and anxiety management?

Research has shown that binaural beats are generally safe to use. Studies have found that they can help reduce pain and anxiety for patients undergoing surgery. For example, binaural beats lowered pain and anxiety during cataract surgery. Another study found that binaural beats outperformed other audio methods in reducing anxiety and pain, with no reported negative effects.

Since binaural beats are non-invasive and involve listening to specific audio frequencies, they are usually well-tolerated. These studies have reported no major negative side effects from using binaural beats. Overall, the evidence suggests that binaural beats provide a safe way to manage pain and anxiety during surgery.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the use of binaural beats for managing postoperative pain and anxiety because this approach is non-invasive and entirely drug-free, offering a unique alternative to traditional pain medications like opioids. Unlike standard treatments that often rely on pharmaceuticals, binaural beats use specific audio frequencies to potentially alter brainwave activity, promoting relaxation and reducing perceived pain. This method could minimize the risk of side effects associated with pain medications and offers a personalized experience since participants can adjust the audio volume for comfort. If proven effective, binaural beats could become a simple and accessible tool for enhancing postoperative recovery.

What evidence suggests that binaural beats might be an effective treatment for postoperative pain and anxiety?

This trial will compare the effects of listening to binaural beats with listening to music of choice for managing postoperative pain and anxiety. Studies have shown that binaural beats can reduce pain and anxiety after surgery. Research indicates that these sounds can lower heart rate and promote relaxation. A review of several studies found that binaural beats are more effective than regular music or silence in easing postoperative pain. In other studies, patients who listened to binaural beats felt less anxious and required fewer pain medications. This suggests that binaural beats might effectively manage pain and anxiety after surgeries like knee or hip replacements.23467
