What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a game-based program called Singularities to determine if it can reduce alcohol-related harms among young people. The researchers aim to discover whether playing Singularities can lower alcohol use and enhance coping skills and healthy social media habits. Participants will engage with either Singularities or a game about nutrition and well-being called Food4Thought. The trial seeks U.S. teens aged 14-18 who have tried alcohol or plan to within the next year and have internet access. As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative research that could positively impact youth health and well-being.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for this trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It seems focused on game-based interventions, so it's unlikely that medication changes are required, but you should confirm with the trial organizers.

What prior data suggests that this game-based intervention is safe for youth?

Past studies have not linked similar educational games like Singularities to any serious health risks. Although specific safety data for Singularities is not yet available, these game-based programs are generally considered safe. They aim to enhance skills and behaviors without causing physical side effects. For those considering participation, the game focuses on improving coping skills and healthy habits, indicating it is well-tolerated.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the Singularities treatment for alcohol use disorder because it takes a novel approach by integrating a game-based intervention with community support and online resources. Unlike traditional treatments that may focus solely on therapy or medication, Singularities encourages the use of adaptive coping skills and protective behavioral strategies through an engaging, web-accessible platform. This innovative method not only targets alcohol use directly but also promotes healthy internet and social media habits, making it a holistic option that resonates with today's digital-savvy individuals.

What evidence suggests that the Singularities game-based intervention is effective for reducing alcohol-related harms among youth?

Research has shown that games like Singularities, which participants in this trial may receive, can help reduce alcohol use and its harmful effects. One study found that people drank less alcohol and used less marijuana after trying similar games. Another study discovered that half of these game-based programs successfully reduced substance use. These games often teach skills such as coping with stress and making safer choices, which are important for managing alcohol use. Although more research is needed, early results suggest that games can support healthier habits.12346
