SD-101 Dermal Cream for EB

This trial tests a skin cream called SD-101 for children with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a condition that causes fragile skin and blisters. The research aims to determine if this cream can heal wounds more effectively than a placebo (a lookalike cream with no active ingredient). Eligible children should have EB types such as Simplex, Recessive Dystrophic, or Junctional, with a wound present for at least 21 days. Participants will visit the clinic four times over two months, with the option to continue using the cream at home afterward. As a Phase 3 trial, this study represents the final step before FDA approval, offering a chance to contribute to a potentially groundbreaking treatment for EB.

You may need to stop certain medications before joining the trial. Specifically, you cannot use any investigational drugs, approved EB therapies, systemic or topical steroids (except inhaled or eye drops), or systemic antibiotics within a specified period before enrollment.

Research has shown that SD-101 Dermal Cream was well-tolerated in past studies. One study found that the 6% cream was safe to use, but it did not outperform a placebo in treating skin lesions related to Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). Another study confirmed that long-term use of SD-101 appeared safe. Participants reported no major side effects, suggesting the treatment is generally safe.¹²³⁴⁵

Most treatments for epidermolysis bullosa (EB) focus on managing symptoms through wound care, antibiotics, and pain management. However, SD-101 Dermal Cream is unique because it directly targets the skin healing process. The cream contains a 6% concentration of active ingredients designed to enhance wound healing and reduce skin blistering. Researchers are excited about SD-101 because it could offer a more effective and targeted approach to treating EB, potentially improving patients' quality of life by accelerating the healing of wounds and reducing pain.

Research has shown that SD-101 cream may help treat wounds in people with various types of epidermolysis bullosa (EB), such as Simplex, Recessive Dystrophic, and Junctional non-Herlitz. Some studies found that SD-101 cream in 3% or 6% strengths helped reduce wounds. In this trial, participants will receive either the SD-101 Dermal Cream (6%) or a placebo comparator. However, other studies noted that the 6% cream did not heal wounds faster than a placebo. Despite these mixed results, SD-101 remains a promising treatment for EB-related skin problems, especially in children. Experts agree that while it may not always outperform a placebo, SD-101 is still a useful option for managing EB wounds.¹²⁴⁶⁷
