What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

The purpose of this research study is to find out if the use of magnesium in addition to Metoprolol, a rate controlling medication that you would be offered in the Emergency Department today unrelated to this study, will help reduce your high heart rate (rapid ventricular response).

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for adults over 18 who speak English, can give consent, and have been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation or flutter causing a fast heart rate (120+ beats per minute) in the emergency room. Participants must be receiving metoprolol to control their heart rate.

Inclusion Criteria

Timeline for a Trial Participant

Screening

Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial

1 day
1 visit (in-person)

Treatment

Participants receive intravenous magnesium followed by metoprolol for rate control in atrial fibrillation

2 hours
1 visit (in-person)

Observation

Participants are monitored for ventricular rate control and other secondary outcomes

24 hours
Continuous monitoring

Follow-up

What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?

Trial Overview

The study tests if adding magnesium sulfate (either 2g or 4g doses) to standard treatment with metoprolol helps slow down the heart rate better than saline (a placebo). Patients are randomly assigned to one of these groups.
